The A-Z Animals Palm Oil Campaign is now closed due the amazing news that the legislation regarding the labeling of palm oil in products within the EU was changed on December 13th 2014.
Thank you to everyone who signed the petition to instigate such monumental change. Fingers crossed for a more sustainable future within the industry to help to save and protect some of the world's most unique and vulnerable species and their habitats.
Did You Know?
- Palm oil plantations are destroying thousands of hectares of natural jungle and peat-lands that are home to some of the world's rarest species!
- The palm oil trade is thought to account for up to 10% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions!
- Thousands of products today contain palm oil, from crisps, chocolate and biscuits to soap, shampoo and lipstick!
- Under current European legislation, companies do not have to state if they have used palm oil in their products, instead it can be labeled as vegetable oil!
We have the right to know what is in the products that we use and consume!
Palm oil is now found in numerous household products but it is often very hard to tell what contains it as companies are permitted to mask their use of palm oil by simply stating that there is "vegetable oil" in the ingredients.
This poses a problem however, as the increased demand for cheap palm oil has had devastating consequences in some of the richest and most unique places on Earth, with vast areas of bio-diverse tropical forest in Malaysia and Indonesia having been illegally wiped out.
These rich and ancient rainforests are home to some of the rarest and most unique animal species on the planet including both Orang-Utan sub-species, one of which is now listed as Endangered and the other as being Critically Endangered.
It is estimated that around 5,000 Orang-Utans are killed every year primarily when they enter palm oil plantations or when mothers try to protect their young from capture. Populations are depleting rapidly with the increasing demand for cheap oil that many companies don't actually know (or care) where it comes from.
However, with all of this going on thousands of miles away there is little consumers can do as it is often hard to determine what products actually contain palm oil. So with your help, A-Z-Animals is striving to change the European legislation forcing all European companies to clearly state palm oil as an ingredient in their products.
We are aiming to collect at least 1 million signatures to be presented to the EU at their headquarters in Brussels.
Even though our campaign is targeting change within the EU, this is a global problem and needs to be addressed by us all. Wherever you are in the world, please sign our petition and support our campaign!
