Black and white dogs are iconic and beautiful. They look great in your pictures, and it’s always easy to spot them on your floor before you trip on them. If you’re someone that is considering welcoming a black and white dog into your home, then you need to know what breeds are available.

1. Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are fierce-looking dogs that appear as though they just wandered out of a wolf pack. They are not very large dogs, reaching just about 60lbs in weight and about 24 inches in height. They’re great companions for people that want a black and white dog that loves exercise. These dogs do best with another partner to play with instead of finding entertainment in shredding your belongings when you’re at work. These dogs are famous for shedding and their propensity for goofiness.

2. Dalmatian

Dalmatians have a rich history of helping humans, and they make great friends.

The Dalmatian is the quintessential black and white dog breed. They have spots all over their bodies, and they have been prized for their looks for decades. They’ve even appeared in a variety of famous media, including movies! In the past, these dogs were trained to work with emergency services when horse-drawn firefighters needed a path cleared. Now, they are mascots at firehouses. These medium-sized dogs stand about 24 inches tall and weigh about 60lbs.

3. Border Collie

Border Collies are fiercely intelligent dogs that have been trained as herders for centuries. They are hardy animals that thrive in the wet, cold weather that permeates the UK. Border Collies often come in black and white colors, and they can make for challenging pets. You can train one of these dogs with a fair amount of patience. However, they are notoriously noisy companions to have in your home, and they definitely need a lot of space to run around in. Also, you can expect to take some frequent trips to the groomer to keep their fur from becoming too long or tangled!

4. Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are small dogs that are members of the mastiff family. They come in many colors including white, tan, red, and gray, but they are popularly black and white. These are perfect companions for people that do not have a lot of room in their home but want a dog. They only weigh up to 25lbs, so they don’t need a ton of space. Boston Terriers are great with families, and they are also very quiet compared to other dogs. People with allergies also love these pets since they have very short fur and don’t shed much!

5. Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog is a famous breed that has worked alongside fishermen as couriers. They have even been trained to work on other projects on boats, like gathering broken nets and gear. These dogs are wonderful for people that don’t want a yappy breed; they tend to be very quiet. They are middling in terms of size, though, weighing 50lbs and standing about 22 inches high. If you like a unique-looking dog that will keep you busy, this is the dog for you!

6. Great Dane

Although many people think of Great Danes and imagine a brown one with black spots, Great Danes do come in black and white. They have two variants called harlequin and tuxedo that prominently feature black and white as their colors. These dogs are good for people that don’t mind loud barks and long walks. The Great Dane is a large breed, weighing up to 175lbs and standing up to 34 inches in some cases. These dogs need a lot of space, but they are smart enough to be trained with ease!

7. Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute can be just as goofy as their smaller cousins, the Siberian Huskies.

Alaskan Malamutes appear to be a larger version of the Siberian Husky. They are large dogs, weighing up to 85 pounds, and they come in black, white, or gray mixes. They are beautiful dogs with intense-looking eyes and a lot of energy. Alaskan Malamutes are working dogs, so they need a bunch of exercise. Also, that black and white fur you love so much will end up all over your furniture as they shed all the time! Nevertheless, they’re loveable and smart pets!

8. Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is a medium-sized pooch that can have significant portions of its body covered in white fur with just small bits of black. These dogs are full of energy but also low maintenance. These animals are known for their frequent barking which can be cut down with training. Unfortunately, they also have the habit of chasing small prey animals like squirrels, so you might get a “present” from time to time. Still, they’re very alert and active dogs, so they’re great watchdogs.

9. Tibetan Terrier

The Tibetan Terrier is a small, cute dog that has long fur to deal with the coldness of their home environments in China. They only weigh 30lbs and they’re hypoallergenic, so they’re great for a wide assortment of owners. These small dogs are often stubborn, so they have to be trained firmly. However, they are very smart, and they love being around people they know. They don’t bark excessively, but they will let you know when a stranger is nearby.

10. French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are sweet little dogs that only grow up to be about 30lbs. They can come in a variety of different colors, including black and white. These dogs are the perfect silly companion for people that like to spend equal amounts of time playing around outside and sitting on the couch. Your French Bulldog will do as you do. They are very low-maintenance animals and they’re rather quiet in terms of barking. They do snore a bit, though.

11. Newfoundland

The Newfoundland breed is a sturdy, work animal that can weigh upwards of 150lbs when it is fully grown. These dogs are massive and require a strong owner that can keep them in line. Although they may look frightening at first glance due to their size, Newfoundlands are sweet, loving dogs that actually suffer from separation anxiety. These dogs need tons of space in your home and yard.

12. Papillon

Also called the Toy Spaniel, the Papillon is a small dog that weighs a mere 9 pounds when it is fully grown. These lovely dogs are great companions that are perfectly sized to sit on your lap. They come in a variety of colors like tan, fawn, chocolate, white, and black. Like other small dogs, Papillons can be a bit yappy. While that can help you when someone is outside your home, it can be a real hindrance to entertaining guests that are not familiar with the dog.

13. Shetland Sheepdog

Shetland Sheepdogs are also called Shelties, and they’re a medium-sized dog that weighs about 25lbs, quite a bit smaller than the Collies which they look like. They are very smart dogs that have been used for herding and other work. They are still featured in various competitions for this and other work, too. The Shetland Sheepdog is easily trained and loves to please its owners. They are perfect family animals, and they come in a bunch of highly desirable colors, including black and white.  

14. Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a very small dog breed that does come in black and white along with an assortment of other colors. These dogs are great for the people with whom they bond, and a bit of a terror for everyone else. They’re very skittish and shy dogs, but they’re very yappy and not afraid to bark at outsiders. These sweet dogs weigh up to 6lbs, and they’re perfect for playing a bit and relaxing together.

15. Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is another large breed of dog that needs a lot of space and a loving owner. These dogs can weigh over 100lbs and they’re very hardy. Sure, they might have a spare brown spot on their face, but they’re mostly just black and white. These dogs are very intelligent and they’re very family-focused. They do need a lot of grooming for their long fur coats, though.
