Did you know that zodiac sign birthdays differ yearly? While typically only differing by a day or two, every calendar year shapes the zodiac seasons in slightly different ways. If you’ve ever heard of a cusp zodiac sign, it’s important to recognize that belonging to two different sun signs isn’t possible. When looking at a birth chart, the sun will always be in a very specific sign, even if you were born on a cusp date!

When we consider Aquarius season, people born under this sun sign typically have birthdays from January 20th to February 18th. However, you may want to check out where the sun was on your specific date of birth, as Aquarius season can fluctuate depending on the year. If you know you’re an Aquarius through and through, let’s talk about the basics behind this sign now.

How much do you know about astrology currently? When we look at every sign of the zodiac, multiple factors are at play behind every sign. For instance, all zodiac signs are influenced by a particular element, modality, planetary ruler, and even their placement on the astrological wheel matters. Aquarians follow Capricorn in the order of the zodiac, learning from this cardinal earth sign the values and drawbacks associated with tradition.

Aquarians are the penultimate zodiac sign, the 11th sign out of a possible 12. This makes them inherently linked to the 11th astrological house, a house representing friend groups, societal focus, and collective connection. The average Aquarius is sociable and adept at connecting to a variety of different friend groups, always having a humanitarian goal in mind. This zodiac sign is deeply motivated by how they can benefit or otherwise affect society as a whole.

Aquarians are also fixed air signs. Aquarius season occurs during the steady, consistent portion of wintertime in the northern hemisphere. Being born during such a stable time of year ensures that Aquarians are fixed. Fixed signs are reliable and steadfast individuals, capable of sustaining and working towards something over the course of their lifetime. While Aquarians have a cold, stoic exterior, they make incredibly dedicated and devoted decisions.

Air signs are special in that they think of things abstractly, first and foremost. Intellectual, creative, and sociable, air signs enjoy connecting and communicating in unique, ephemeral ways. Aquarians may be the most eccentric of the air signs, clever and occasionally obtuse in their communication style. This zodiac sign is known for its innovative nature, capable of coming up with previously unheard-of ideas in an instant.

Aquarius Zodiac Sign: Planetary Ruler and Symbolism

It may surprise you to hear that Aquarians are air signs rather than water signs, based on the symbolism surrounding Aquarius. This zodiac sign is known as the water bearer, symbolized by a person pouring forth a vase full of water. The symbology behind Aquarius dates back to Babylonian times, as the Aquarius constellation was one of the first constellations ever discovered.

Given Aquarius’s connection to the 11th house and its position in the night sky, this zodiac sign is often interpreted as pouring water so that the final zodiac sign, Pisces, can swim and complete the astrological wheel. This generous, humanitarian focus is synonymous with the Aquarian personality, as Aquarians are incredibly giving individuals. Still, the water bearer of the zodiac carries a great deal of weight all on their own.

For some signs of the zodiac, the notion of a planetary ruler has changed over the centuries. While Aquarius was once ruled by Saturn in ancient astrological teachings, Uranus’s disruptive discovery felt naturally aligned with the Aquarius personality. Saturn rules Capricorn in both modern and ancient astrology, representing tradition, restriction, responsibility, and time. Uranus only rules Aquarius and represents innovation, disruption, unpredictability, and new invention.

What does this mean for the Aquarius personality? Given that they were once Saturn-ruled, the average Aquarius understands their place in the world and how they can be responsible people. Aquarians honor tradition and respect everyone’s unique beliefs, but Uranus commands every Aquarius to reinvent the world around them. Uranus is all about innovation and disrupting the status quo, something that Aquarians know how to do while still honoring the past.

While not exactly contrarian, Aquarians aren’t afraid to rebel or otherwise do things that go against the norm.

There is a cerebral and inventive side to every Aquarius sun. Deeply intellectual and philosophical, Aquarians enjoy talking about all things abstract with their wide, diverse social circle. While the clinical and stoic side of every Aquarius can feel intimidating or unapproachable at times, this zodiac sign enjoys forthright, intriguing individuals. Despite their intimidating personas, Aquarians are incredibly pragmatic and helpful friends.

However, Aquarians are likely going to be your weirdest friends as well! With disruptive Uranus ruling them, Aquarians can’t help but be different. While not exactly contrarian, Aquarians aren’t afraid to rebel or otherwise do things that go against the norm. They enjoy being eccentric, odd, and innovative in all things, whether it be their fashion sense or choice of career. However, given their fixed natures, Aquarians can occasionally be rigid in their weirdnesses.

Analytical and encouraging, Aquarians have little room in their lives for prejudice or conservative ways of being. While their opinions can be a bit harsh or set in stone, Aquarians value freedom of thought and expression. They know how to advocate for others, but the emotional interior of an Aquarius can be difficult for them to understand. That’s why it’s important for this often-existential zodiac sign to surround themselves with people who care about them!
