Why Does It Get So Cold in Canfield?

The reason for Canfield’s coldness can be linked to several factors. But experts think the most important reason is that the city lies in a low-lying area. The city is located in a frost pocket, and cold air tends to sink it.

Cloud cover is another factor that contributes to the coldness of this city. On average, Canfield only gets 162 sunny days in an entire year. The city’s unique location with respect to Lake Erie, which is the fourth largest lake in North America, also contributes to its cold weather.

Canfield is on the outskirts of Lake Erie’s shadow. This means it enjoys cloud cover during the day, and the clouds break up at night, leading to low nighttime temperatures. In Canfield, up to 133 days during the year have low nighttime temperatures below the freezing point.

Coldest Place in Ohio — History

Canfield city was established as a township in 1798. The Connecticut Land Company owned the land where this town is currently located as a part of the Connecticut Land Reserve. It was initially purchased by six men, but Judson Canfield, a Connecticut state judge, owned the majority of the land.

On April 15, 1800, the town was officially named Canfield after Judson Canfield. The earliest residents mostly came from Connecticut. Shortly after the first residents settled in, a wave of German migrants arrived in 1805, and some Irish Catholics followed in 1852.

There were no major road networks in the first few years of the town’s existence. Goods were hauled in by carriage from Pittsburgh, 55 miles away, and other cities. Later, the Beaver Canal was constructed, becoming the principal means of transportation. By 1805, Canfield was a regional hub for trade, with about 17 families living in it. The stagecoach service was created much later in the 1800s. It transported mail and travelers to and from Canfield.

In 1846, Mahoning County was created. Canfield, which was formerly a part of Trumbull County, was made the county seat for the county. This was a controversial move since Canfield was not the biggest town in the region. It remained the county seat until 1874 when the Ohio state legislature voted to move it to the much bigger Youngstown.

What Is the Population of the Coldest Place in Ohio?

Canfield has the typical wildlife of every other city. That includes bunnies, chipmunks, mice, and so on. However, there is some not-to-typical wildlife too. Coyotes, for instance, are among the animals you’re likely to spot in Canfield. Interestingly, coyotes are not native to Ohio. Still, they’re found in all 88 counties in the state, including Mahoning County, where Canfield is located.

Other species you’re likely to find occasionally include deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, and bears. Due to the coldness of Canfield, seeing wildlife in the open, especially during certain seasons of the year, is unlikely. However, the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary is an excellent place to see wildlife in the region. Located in Beaver Township’s Mill Creek corridor, the 482-acre Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary once served as a fish farm and now protects a wide variety of aquatic, marsh, and upland ecosystems. Initial funding for the 264-acre preserve came from the NatureWorks and Clean Ohio Conservation Fund grant programs in 2005.

Hundreds of birds can be observed foraging in wetland and mudflat areas in Canfield. These locations are particularly attractive to shorebirds and wading birds. A total of 260 different bird species have been spotted at the Wildlife Sanctuary.

A viewing platform next to the parking lot provides visitors with unrestricted access to the sanctuary’s habitats without entering the protected area. Spotting scopes and binoculars can be helpful tools.

Other Interesting Facts About Canfield

The Canfield Fairgrounds hosts one of the largest fairs in Ohio. The yearly event sees an average of 350,000 people visit the town over the Labor Day weekend. The week-long event, which began in 1846, was instituted as a way to increase agricultural awareness in the area. Visitors at the fair are treated to an assortment of food, rides, games, and different events.

Canfield is the home to many other attraction centers. There’s the Arms Family Museum of Local History, Glamorgan Castle, Guilford Lake State Park, National Aviary, Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, Hidden Valley, Kyle Woods State Nature Preserve, and more.

Conclusion

Canfield, Ohio, was named by Money magazine as the 82nd best city in America to reside in back in 2005. It’s a peaceful, crime-free, small town with relatively fair weather if you ignore its tendency to get frosty sometimes.
