If you’re playing a game of Scrabble, and want to impress your opponent, fruits that start with the letter U are the perfect way to get that triple word score! You may be able to name one or two, but these fruits don’t end up in your lunchbox like apples and bananas. So, don’t worry if you are drawing a blank! Here we have a complete list of fruits that start with U.

You may have never heard of some of these fruits because not all of them are available in every part of the world. However, you can get most of them at your local grocery store! A diet rich in fruit can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower the risk of eye and digestive problems, and even help keep you full, as fruits have a positive effect on blood sugar. Fruits also provide essential nutrients like vitamins C and A. They are also rich in dietary fiber and potassium.

The following list encompasses all of the delicious fruits that start with U. Add them to your diet to get all the yummy and healthy benefits!

1. Ugli Fruit

This may be the worst-looking fruit that starts with U! It is commonly known by its proprietary names: ugli fruit, uglifuit, and uniq fruit. People also call it the Jamaican tangelo due to its origin on the island of Jamaica and the natural hybridization of a tangerine with a pomelo, or a grapefruit. Tangerine + Pomelo = Tangelo

It is a citrus fruit that is related to the lemon. Native Jamaicans named it the “ugli fruit” because of its ugly and wrinkly greenish-yellow rind. People describe its taste as sourer than an orange, but less bitter than a grapefruit. Its smell is also similar smell to oranges, both in the rind and when opened. The ugli fruit is seasonal from December to April and distributed in the United States between November and April. Occasionally, people distribute the fruit from July to September.

The ugli fruit is rich in vitamin C. And like other fruits that start with U, it is low in calories and contains powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidants called flavonoids. At only around 45 calories, the fruit will fill you with fiber but not calories. It also can help and improve your skin, vision, digestive health, and bone health.

This fruit is an Italian wine grape, and one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world because it adapts well to highly diverse growing conditions. And it won’t be the only fruit that starts with U that makes wine on this list!

It is the most widely planted white grape in all of France. While you can eat the grapes straight off the vine, they are more enjoyable as wine. You can eat it straight off the vine, but it differs greatly from eating a table grape.

This fruit start with U because Ugni Blanc is the French name for Trebbiano Toscano. The Trebbiano family account for around a third of all white wine in Italy, and the white grape creates a dry white wine that is acidic and low in alcohol. The wine is usually between 7.5 and 10.5%. The white wine these grapes make is fresh and fruity with a discreet aroma, however, it does not keep long. The grape is also the leading choice for making top-quality brandies such as Cognac.

3. Ugni Molinae

Commonly known as Chilean guava berry or strawberry myrtle, the Ugni molinae is an edible fruiting shrub. Ugni is a genus of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae. The evergreen shrub stands upright with bushy forest green foliage and differs during all four seasons!

In the spring the dense shrub gives off an exquisite fragrance from its small white bell-shaped flowers. These flowers bloom into deep-red fruits that ripen in the late summer and have a delicious strawberry-esque flavor. It is said that the intoxicating, royal red berries were Queen Victoria’s favorite! They are just as tasty eaten right off the bush or cooked and made into a jam. Also, the fruit’s whole shrub is versatile! Tea is made from the leathery green leaves and a coffee substitute comes from the berry’s roasted seeds.

Ugni molinae is native to Chile and regions of southern Argentina. In its natural habitat, a temperate rainforest, the fruit matures from March to May.

4. Umbu Fruit

The Umbu fruit or spondias tuberosa is native to northeast Brazil. It grows on a small tree in dry lands and is a light yellow to red color. The fruit varies in size ranging from small berries to as big as a lemon. The peel is a smooth green or yellow, and you know if the fruit is ripe because the usually firm Umbu becomes juicy and soft. The fruit also has a large pit inside, similar to an avocado.

The fruit’s combination of sugar, acidity, and phenolic compounds produces an exotic, acid-sweet taste. Like other fruits that start with U, people eat the fruit in multiple ways such as fresh off the branch or made into jams. Umbu fruit is also made into fruit cheeses and is ideal for mixing with plums or used in fruit juices and sorbets.

5. Urava Fruit

These green fruits are considered berries and may be hard to find at your local grocery store. Urava fruit grows throughout East Africa and Southeast Asia in mangroves. They have a flat-round shape, and when cut in half, they present a dark, maroon-colored pulp with many seeds.

Many Indian dishes use Urava fruit for flavoring. It isn’t eaten raw very often because it doesn’t present a sweet flavor. Though classified as a fruit, people use Urava as a vegetable while cooking. They taste similar to quince fruit which is supposed to be a cross between an apple and a pear with a tart taste.

6. Uva Rara Grape

The red-wine grape means “rare grape” in Italian. But contrary to its name, it is a common wine grape.


Uva Rara is an Italian red wine grape variety grown in southern Lombardy which is in northwest Italy. The grape typically makes a medium-bodied wine with hints of roses or berries that are sweet and low in acidity. The wine can also have a bitter finishing taste. Uva Rara is best known as a blending grape. The grape adds softness and fruit hues to wines. They are often used in the red wines of the Oltrep Pavese DOC system. DOC means denominazione di origine controllata. It specifies the production area and methods for the wine and guarantees the quality standard of wines that pass a government taste test.

And although part of the fruit’s name translates to rare, the grape is very popular. In fact, in 2000, vineyards planted 1,502 acres of Uva Rara throughout Italy in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions. Also, despite the similarities of synonyms and use in many of the same wines, there is no relationship between Uva Rara and other grape varieties.

7. Uva Tosca Grapes

Uva Tosca is another red Italian wine grape variety. The grapes make a spicy yet elegant red wine and are grown in the Emilia-Romagna region of east-central Italy. This is the only grape variety grown in the higher elevations of the Val Secchia area. In 2016, 71.66 acres of vines were reported.

Though the Tosca in the fruit’s name means “from Tuscany” However, despite the grape’s name, there is little evidence to believe that it originated in Tuscany. Or that it even has a close genetic relationship with the notable Tuscan wine grape, Sangiovese. This grape is known under the synonym Uva Tosca as well. Though in 2010, DNA suggested that the grape may be a natural crossing between the Alto-Adige wine grape Schiava Grossa and Crepallocchi, a red wine grape in the northernmost part of Italy.

8. Ume/Umeboshi Fruit

The Japanese fruit is usually eaten in small quantities with rice for added flavor. 


Umeboshi is pickled, or brined, ume fruits. They are common in Japan and the word umeboshi is often translated as “salted Japanese plums.” The Japanese town of Minabe, Wakayama, grows more ume and produces more umeboshi than any other town.

Ume is a species of fruit-bearing tree in the genus Prunus that is often called a plum. However, it is more closely related to the apricot. Pickled, not dried, ume are called umezuke.

The popular fruit is extremely sour and salty due to high citric acid, however sweet umeboshi made with honey is also a favorite. It is usually served as a side dish for rice or eaten on rice balls. The round fruit is also used as a cooking accent to enhance flavor and presentation. The snack in Japan is the equivalent of “eating an apple day.”

The Usuma fruit tree (Bunchosia argentea) is also called the silver peanut butter fruit tree, because this unique fruit tastes like everyone’s favorite nut butter. These trees grow in the Andean region of South America.

The fruit is small and oval-shaped with dark green skin that turns red when fully ripe. With its peanut butter taste, it is used in a variety of preparations such as jam, milkshakes, juices, and smoothies. The fruit is rich in fiber, and you can eat fresh and raw as well!

10. Umbra Fruit

The Umbra fruit contains a fibrous pit and is more commonly known as the June plum or the Hog apple. You can eat the fruit raw, though its flesh is crunchy and sour with tart acidity. It is very nutritional and rich in vitamins B, C, and A. Umbra is best when fully colored, and tastes like a mix of pineapple and mango. When it is fully ripe the flesh is golden in color.

The fruit can be eaten in a variety of ways but is most often eaten with salt, chili powder, sugar, or shrimp paste. It is also made into jams, jellies, and preserves. It is also added to foods like soups and sauces for additional flavorings. Umbra can also be candied or processed into drinks.

11. Uvilla Fruit

Uvillas originate from Brazil. The fruit was naturalized in high-altitude places in tropical Peru and Chile. The fruit doesn’t fall to the ground when they are ripe, instead, they get nice and bright with a tart, sweet, citrus taste.

A paper wrapper surrounds the berry like a cape, and it is distantly related to tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and other members of the nightshade family. Uvillas are a superfood. They are low in calories and high in antioxidants, polyphenols, and carotenoids. They are beneficial for treating weight loss, inflammation, diabetes, liver and kidney health, and even improving the immune system.

12. Udara Fruit

Often called the white star apple, the Udara grows on its tree in tropical Africa. It is closely related to the African star apple which is common throughout West Africa. Some even think they may be a variety of the same species.

The fruit also has great health benefits. It contains only 67 calories and is high in Vitamin C which helps the body fight immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. Its sweet and sour taste is a natural remedy for constipation, toothaches, sore throats, and indigestion. Also, the fruit’s acidity can help prevent the urge of vomiting during pregnancy.

13. Ukrainian Heart Tomato

Tomatoes are classified as fruit because they contain seeds, and they grow from the flower of the plant.


The Ukranian heart tomato is a large heart-shaped fruit, hence the name, with a rich and fruity flavor. The tomatoes contain small lodges with little gel and few seeds. They have great plant production and cluster in two to three fruits. The tomatoes are meaty which means they can stand up to any sandwich filling without falling apart.

The tomatoes grow in Alabama, California, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee. All states are without harsh temperatures since the fruits don’t enjoy cold weather. In fact, the more sun they get, the sweeter a tomato tastes.

14. Usakhelauri

The wine variety from the grape is a rare and ancient red variety unique to the Republic of Georgia.

Usakhelauri is a red-wine grape variety. It grows on loamy, chalky hillsides in the western Republic of Georgia on small family properties. The grape is enjoying a small revival due to its quality and more plantings are popping up in the Alzani Valley of the country. The fruit’s vines bud early and ripen at the end of September. The grapes are a round black, berry with a violet bloom. They are of smaller size which leads experts to believe the Usakhelauri grapes are related to the wild wines of the country.

The fruit is a rare variety of grapes due to the limited amount of land available to grow them. The highly valued grape creates a delicate sweet wine with a strawberry tint. It is said to have a pleasant velvet taste with hues of delicate bouquets.

15. Ububese Fruit

The English name for the fruit is the African custard apple of the award custard apple.


The Ububese fruit is native to various tropical regions around Africa. They are similar to soursops but have less prominent bumps. Instead, they have large, greenish, and yellow scales.

They have yellow fibrous flesh that tastes and looks like custard. It is sweet and mainly eaten fresh for dessert. The fruit’s peak season is from April to June.

16. Umbrella Squash

You may think of fruit in the summer and squash in the fall, but botanically speaking, all squash are fruits. They contain seeds and develop from the flower-producing part of the plant. So, this summer squash’s nickname starts is on the list to show a different type of fruit that starts with U. You may see squash as a vegetable because you prepare and serve the fruit in the same manner as most vegetables. They also aren’t as sweet as other fruits.

The umbrellas squash, or pattypan squash, is notable for its round and shallow shape with scalloped edges resembling a flying saucer. The fall favorite comes in white, yellow, orange, light green, dark green, and multicolored varieties. When consumed, squash is an excellent source of magnesium, vitamins A and C, and niacin. Also, people put out the fruit as decoration in the fall months in a multitude of ways. You can scoop out the inside to make a container for other dishes or set it on your mantle for a fun autumn scene!

The squash is only 20 to 30 calories depending on size and offers no fat. People cook the fun-looking fruit in many ways varying from slicing it, baking it, or even coating and frying it up until crispy, golden brown.

17. Umari Fruit

Umari fruits grow on a tree of the same name mainly in the Amazonian jungle at the border between Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This habitat along the Amazon River has the necessary climate conditions for the fruit to grow.

The umari produces the fruit in the tree’s third year of life. People harvest the fruit from January to April. Umari fruits have a fleshy, edible pulp, and when opened they emit an intense aroma. People consume both the pulp and the fruit’s oil raw or cooked. Jungle inhabitants use the fruit’s buttery texture to make vegetable butter.

The fruit is getting harder and harder to find due to climate change and the intense deforestation of the Amazon basin.

This super rare fruit has two edible parts. You can easily separate the seeds and pulp of the Utu fruit, and eat both, especially the sticky sap The juicy pulp is sweet like marzipan, though some are tart. The seeds and string that held the pulp in the shell are also edible. They taste sour like yogurt. The fruit grows on a shrubby, vining plant and, it is also only native to tropical West Africa.

The seasonal fruit is a good source of vitamins A and C. You can also ferment the seeds into wine or beer, or a delicious tangy fruit drink. Also, the pulp is added as a flavor to cereals as well as fish dishes. It can also reduce the pain and conditions of edema and rheumatism by massaging the sap on the affected areas.

19. Ulu Fruit

Ulu is a protein-rich tropical superfruit! It grows on the Hawaiian Islands and in the Caribbean, South Asia, and Polynesia. You can eat the produce at any stage of its life cycle. When it is raw and green, the fruit tastes like an artichoke. If the Ulu fruit is a bit riper, it tastes and cooks like a potato. When it is wholly or even over-ripe, it is sweet and eaten like a fruity dessert pudding.

It is also called breadfruit by native Hawaiians. The fruit gets this nickname because when roasted it resembles baked bread. This versatile fruit can not only feed an entire family, but it is also super due to extraordinarily great nutritional benefits. It is higher in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals than white potatoes!

20. Uvaria Chamae

Uvaria chamae is a large shrub or small street that is native to West and Central Africa. It grows in wet and dry forests as well as coastal scrublands. The common name of bush bananas refers to this fruit growing in small bunches. Every part of the fruit and where it grows is a food source. The flowers are slightly sweet, and the fruit is pleasant even when consumed raw. People comment that it tastes similar to Lucerne.

People also use it as a medicinal plant to treat a variety of illnesses from fevers to fevers to using it for its antibiotic properties. Uvaria chamae can also help treat malaria. Other diseases it cures are piles, menorrhagia, and epistaxis. It even helps heal injuries and lowers fevers in children.
