Yellowstone, the TV series, has grown in popularity, so much that it’s branched off into different shows within the same universe. If you’ve been catching up, you may have heard of ‘1883’, the prequel to Yellowstone. This eye-catching show is filmed in some beautiful places, but where? And can you visit? What is “1883” About?

The series 1883′ tells the story of how the Dutton family journeyed far to eventually develop the Yellowstone Ranch. The show takes place in 1883, however, there are flashbacks to previous years. In this series, the Dutton family travel from Tennessee to Montana. They travel through Texas and Oregon. Some main characters in this show include Shea Brennan, James Dillard Dutton, Margaret Dutton, and Elsa Dutton.

Shea Brennan leads the expedition and works for the Pinkerton Agency. He was a captain in the Union Army during the American Civil War and has suffered a lot, losing loved ones. James Dutton is a family man and former captain in the Confederate States Army. His wife, Margaret Dutton travels with their children on a train to Fort Worth from Tennessee. Their daughter, Elsa Dutton, is the main narrator of the story. She’s 17, adventurous, and eager for a new life.

This show has 10 episodes and first aired on December 19, 2021. Its last episode aired on February 27, 2022. The running time for each episode varies but is between 44 and 67 minutes. The show also stars great actors and artists including Tim McGraw, Sam Elliot, Faith Hill, Isabel May, and LaMonica Garrett. You can watch this show on Paramount+.

Where was ‘1883’ Filmed?

The show ‘1883’ was filmed in multiple locations including Texas and Montana. Some scenes were shot in Dallas, Texas, Fort Worth, Texas, and Granbury, Texas. Other scenes were filmed in Darby, Montana, and outdoor areas near Livingston. Many of the scenes were also filmed close to Yellowstone National Park. Interestingly, for this show, a new and western permanent town was built with 26 structures. The headquarters for filming was set in Fort Worth, Texas.

About Livingston Montana

If you want to map out where ‘1883’ is filmed, it’s good to start with Livingston Montana. This city is conveniently located on the Yellowstone River and is close to Yellowstone National Park. It’s home to about 8,040 people. Livingston’s history began in the late 1800s, however, the city wasn’t incorporated until December 21, 1882. The surface area of this city is 6.04 square miles. Interestingly, Yellowstone and ‘1883’ aren’t the only series or films shot in the city. Some notable works filmed in Livingston are Rancho Deluxe (1975), A River Runs Through It (1987), Cowboys vs. Dinosaurs (2015), and Wildlife (2018).

When is the Best Time to Visit?

While Livingston is a small city, it is charming and does offer some great attractions and tourist options. The best time to visit Livingston is May through August. During summer, this lovely city is vibrant and busy. Its busiest month for tourism is July. Many people stay in hotels within the city and travel to Yellowstone National Park, which is north of Livingston. Fishing is another popular activity, especially during summer. Although many people visit this lovely town during summer, you can also partake in many winter activities like skiing and snowboarding.

Climate and Geography

Livingston Montana is beautiful. Its altitude is about 4,501 feet. The city is located in the Mountain Time Zone (MT). This city is mountainous and surrounded by gorgeous rocky peaks. Livingston is a warm winter state that sees about 56 inches of snowfall every year. The highest recorded temperature in the city is 105°F, while the coldest temperature is -41°F. The warmest month is July with an average high of 85.7°F.

Wildlife

What animals can you encounter where ‘1883’ was filmed? The answer may surprise you. Many large and small animals walk through the city, which makes sense considering how close the town is to Yellowstone National Park. If you visit Livingston, you may see moose, wolverines, elk, grizzly bears, and lynxes. Birds are some of the most commonly spotted animals in the city. Here, you can spot American dippers, bald eagles, American coots, and long-billed curlews.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

Texas summers are brutal. While you can visit the Dallas-Forth Worth metro area during the summer, pack sunscreen as temperatures nearing 100 aren’t uncommon. The best time to visit this area is between September and November. Within these few months, the temperature is cool without being too cold. Tourism is also low, meaning you won’t have to stand in long crowded lines. Fall is also beautiful as you can see the seasons change.

Although Dallas is very urban if you travel to Plano or Irving for beautiful walking trails and parks. Two popular parks in Plano where you can see Fall foliage are Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve.

Climate and Geography

Unlike Livingston, Montana, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is relatively flat. There aren’t large mountains, but different environments. However, most of the land is prairie land with rolling hills. Man-made lakes and creeks are very common, especially in Plano, Irving, and Arlington. The soil in this metroplex is very fertile since the area is situated in the Texas Blackland prairies region. This is more common in Collin County, compared to Dallas.

This region has a humid subtropical climate. It varies in weather, but the area can experience extreme weather including large thunderstorms and tornados. Some parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro are located in Tornado Alley. The hottest months are typically July and August. It isn’t uncommon for the outside temperature to reach 105 °F. The highest temperature recorded in the area is 113 °F during the Heat Wave of 1980. Winters are cool, but tolerable. The first frost typically occurs in early November. While uncommon, in recent years, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has experienced snowfall.

Wildlife

You don’t have to look too far to spot wild animals in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro area. Some common animals include pond sliders, northern cardinals, Texas spiny lizards, coyotes, bobcats, American beavers, and European rabbits. The majority of animal species found in the Dallas area are birds. For example, Texas is home to over 600 bird species, many of which live in North Texas. If you’re interested in viewing wildlife, you can visit the Trinity River Audubon Center. It’s located in Dallas and has many bird-watching lookouts, biking, and hiking trails. The nature trails and bird-watching lookouts are in the Great Trinity Forest.
