Coming face to face with any animal in the wild that is larger than we are can be terrifying. Whether it is the king of the jungle, the lion, the fierce grizzly bear, or the enormously aggressive hippopotamus. As we know from the research we read and study, running away from these animals is never a good idea.
Is it Okay to Run from an Aggressive Animal?
“Fight or flight” is what has been ingrained in our minds in the society we live in. It is our body’s natural reaction to do one or the other. However, when it comes to animals like the grizzly bear, lion, or hippo, do we think we can actually fist-fight them and win? Okay, so then the only alternative is to run. Do we think we can outrun these animals? Let’s take a look!
How Fast Can a Lion Run?
A lion weighing anywhere from 264-550 pounds can run up to 35 miles per hour!
How Fast Can a Grizzly Bear Run?
Grizzly bears that weigh anywhere from 400-800 pounds can run up to 35 miles per hour!
How Fast Can a Hippopotamus Run?
Hippos weigh anywhere from 2,200-9,900 pounds and can run up to 30 miles per hour!
How Fast Can a Human Run?
When we see these speeds, it is utterly amazing how fast these animals can run. However, the average human can run nowhere near these speeds. The average human can only run six miles per hour. Let’s just say we wouldn’t get very far from any of these animals.
But what about a great white shark? Would that be any different because it takes place in the water?
Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) Facts
This YouTube video posted below takes us to South Africa, where a diver is hooking his GoPro up and ready to dive down to catch some amazing footage. However, he wasn’t expecting to get so close to the footage he caught!
As he dives down, it is almost no time at all before suddenly a great white shark crosses directly in front of him! If we play the video at 33 seconds, we see that this diver wasn’t even aware the shark was so close. We hear him yell out in the water. And as soon as the great white shark passes, the man keeps yelling out. And smartly so, because this yelling scared the shark off.
Great white sharks can weigh anywhere from 2,450-4,938 pounds and reach 18-26 feet. These incredible sharks can reach up to 15 miles per hour in the water.
