It’s very common to hear that we never know what lurks beneath the waters when it comes to being in the wild. Most videos on animals going to the watering hole to drink water are very cautious. We will see them looking around as if they know there is danger close by. However, these animals know they must come to drink to survive. Let’s see this wild drama unfold in the video at the top.

Crocodile Lurking in Sri Lanka

The YouTube video at the top of this blog post takes us to Sri Lanka in South Asia. BBC Earth is a dedicated leader in the animal world. They film educational documentaries that help us understand animals’ lives in their natural habitat. They offer a short description of what happens in the video below.

“The dry season in South-Eastern Sri Lanka brings all kinds of animals to the watering hole. But as they drink, they are unaware of a ferocious predator, with remarkable hunting skills, waiting in the depths.”

Crocodile Attacking Deer

At the start of the video, at the top, we are taken to Sri Lanka. And the watering hole that they show is the only one around for miles because it is the dry season. And these waters are filled with mugger crocodiles. The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) can weigh up to 440 pounds and reach five meters or 16 feet long

This crocodile swims up and down and looks longingly at the deer lining the shoreline. The narrator shares that one adult deer would feed him for the dry season. However, as he approaches shore, we see the deer disperse. He knows that he must hide himself.

He covers himself in the mud; he knows he must make the perfect disguise. Once he has done that, he is now ready. Later we see a group of deer come to the water to drink. Suddenly, at 2:20, the crocodile strikes in the most shocking display of strength and grabs one deer and drags it down to be killed.

What Do Crocodiles Eat?

There are over 20 species of crocodiles that live in Africa, Asia, Central America, North America, and South America. Crocodiles are carnivores, which means they eat meat.

It may be easy to assume that crocodiles feast on large animals like the one captured in the video at the top. However, they also dine on smaller animals as well. Crocodiles eat smaller prey like fish, birds, frogs, and crustaceans.

Crocodiles can eat anywhere from 2-5 pounds of meat per day. However, as we saw in the video at the top, a large deer could feed a crocodile for quite a long time. And this crocodile went to incredible lengths to get the food he desperately needed to survive.
