The notorious raccoon is like a little bandit, complete with a mask! However, not all thieves are made equal, it seems, as even the best of them might run into troubles during a heist. While we don’t get to see the sneak in action in the below clip, we get thorough coverage of his rescue. You see, the plan apparently involved breaking into an attic, except the way in was extremely misjudged – a thief’s entrance needs to be at least big enough for him to fit his whole body through!
Will this flubbed caper at least have a good ending? (Don’t worry, it does.) Let’s learn more about these shifty critters and the tricks they use while the wildlife control arrives!
What Attracts the Raccoon?
The below video doesn’t give us the whole story about the legendary treasure within the attic, so we might never know. Seriously though, raccoons are adept scavengers in their determined search for food! They can jump, climb, and even swim while hunting. Capable of more than a few acrobatic feats, these animals will let little get in the way of their munchies. Another tool they aren’t afraid to use are their advanced front paws, capable of sensing a wide variety of info from their environment.
Since we’re talking about searching for snacks, let’s take a closer look at what raccoons enjoy eating. As omnivores, they enjoy a range of meals, usually centered around a plant-based menu. However, this doesn’t stop them from also trying insects, fish, and unfortunately for us, trash. It’s not that these bushy little guys aren’t gourmets, they’re just trying to get a well-rounded diet!
What Exactly is a Raccoon?
Is it a cat, a dog, or possibly a tiny bear? The answer might surprise you – it’s technically none of the above! These crafty animals belong to the Procyonidae family, with their closest relative being the ringtail. Other exotic kin they share include the kinkajou, cacomistle, and olinguito. Never heard of many of these? Not to worry, this family is a somewhat uncommon one in the animal kingdom, despite being prolific in the wild.
Did you know that classically, raccoons and their relatives were thought to be somehow connected to the bear family? While the comparison certainly makes sense due to their overall build, recent studies point to a different link. While not directly related, raccoons are now thought to be distantly allied with the weasel family tree. Quite an interesting discovery, and you can kind of see the mischievous nature they share in common!
