In this incredible video, you will see a shark come out of nowhere to steal a fisherman’s 6ft catch! Off the coast of Australia, in the waters near Weipa, Queensland, a group of fishermen are trying to pull in a good-sized catch. You can tell by the arching bend in the fishing pole that this fish is up for a fight! The friend narrating the video chimes in, “He’s got a massive mackerel.” And you can hear the line being let out. The fisherman moves to the front of the boat to get a better footing. You can see him reel the line closer and the 6-foot Spanish mackerel surfaces to the left of the boat. Now you get the picture of just how big this fish is!

Watch the Incredible Footage Below!

Spanish mackerels can get to be 2.4 m (7 feet) and weigh as much as 40 kg (88 lbs). They are a torpedo-shaped fish with silvery scales and blue vertical banding. They live in the Indo-Pacific region and prefer tropical or sub-tropical waters. In far northern Australia the summer months are when you will find the most. That is when they come together for the annual spawning season. The spawning season varies by location in Australia so do your research before trying to snag one of these.

Clearly, the fishermen in the video have chosen the right time of year to catch this mackerel. All they have to do is reel it close enough to the boat to haul it into the boat. The mackerel isn’t quite ready for that yet. It swims under the boat and then circles around, the fishermen giving it some lead. As it swims up next to the boat another fisherman tries to grab it with a hand-help stick with a large metal hook on the end. He snags the fish and tries to pull it into the boat but after the fish thrashes around he is not able to get it into the boat. The fisherman comments, “He’s not happy now!”.

The mackerel is still hooked by the fishing pole and you can see it swim back around to the left of the boat. It starts to surface when a large shark comes out of nowhere! This shark comes out of nowhere to steal a fisherman’s 6ft catch! You see the shark swim up from under the boat right toward the mackerel and the shark sinks its teeth in the mackerel’s middle! The shark yanks the mackerel, snapping the line and thrashes it back and forth, all in view of the camera. A small pool of red blood is seen around the fish. Then the shark, which is probably around 8 feet long, drags the fish underwater and the surface of the ocean is still again.

The camera pans up to get the fisherman’s response which is obviously one of disbelief! One of the fishermen comments, “That was pretty cool.” The other fishermen look over the edge of the boat to see if they can see the shark or what is left of the mackerel and comments how they still see it “kicking around down there.” They still can’t believe the shark comes out of nowhere to steal the fisherman’s 6ft catch. The comment that sums it all up is made right before they see the shark surface again as it swims away, “Geez, I hate sharks…bloody sharks!”

Not as scary as the experience an Australia spearfisherman had when a bull shark charged at him underwater! Read more about that here!
