Navigating airports when you’re traveling can be very tricky. It’s not surprising that many Florida airports are hectic. The state is a popular choice for vacationers, retirees, and tourists. So, which airports are the busiest? We’ve explored which airports are the busiest airports in the entire United States. Below, we’ll examine which Florida airports see the most travelers!
1. Miami International Airport (MIA)
The airport in Miami is in an excellent position for many leisure destinations. In 2022, MIA served over 50 million passengers, breaking its previous record of 45.9 million set in 2019. MIA is the primary airport that serves the Miami area, with over 1,000 daily flights to 167 domestic and international destinations. The airport set records by total aircraft operations, total cargo traffic, and total passenger traffic! This airport won’t be slowing down anytime soon, either. They’re looking to process at least 77 million passengers and 4 million tons of freight annually by the year 2040!
2. Orlando International Airport (MCO)
There’s a reason why Orlando International Airport is known as the 7th busiest airport in the United States and the 7th busiest airport in the world. MCO recently saw its busiest day ever! MCO saw a total of 95,287 departing passengers, shattering its record of 93,000 passengers departing from the airport back in 2019. Located about six miles southeast of Downtown Orlando, the airport sees plenty of guests all year thanks to its proximity to Walt Disney World Resort. Orlando International has expanded to serve more customers, opening the state-of-the-art Terminal C, costing over $2 billion!
3. Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
Located about three miles southwest of Downtown Fort Lauderdale and 21 miles north of Miami, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport sees 700 daily flights to 135 domestic and international destinations. With its four terminals and 66 gates, it’s a popular arrival airport for cruise departures thanks to its proximity to Port Everglades. FLL is a common secondary option for travelers who can’t book a flight through Miami International Airport. You can catch a glimpse of the beautiful artwork from internationally known artist and sculptor Duane Hanson at the Terminal 1 Arrival Level.
4. Tampa International Airport (TPA)
Officials declared this summer as Tampa International Airport’s busiest summer yet! TPA expects to see approximately 70,000 passengers daily, with over 90,000 passengers on its busiest days. Their checkpoint data showed that they broke records for spring break this year. They expanded to include nursing rooms and pet relief areas at every airside in order to better serve their customers. It’s close to some of the best beaches, fantastic shopping, and many attractions, making it consistently ranked by travelers as Florida’s best airport.
5. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)
Southwest Florida International Airport has gotten some poor reviews when it comes to being kid-friendly. The lack of family essentials, including lounges with family rooms, listed family restrooms, and kid-friendly entertainment options, has many parents avoiding this airport. Officials from the Lee County Port Authority (LCPA) are in the process of expanding its passenger terminal. They hope to complete this project by 2025 and create job opportunities, effectively boosting the local economy. As of 2022, RSW has seen over 10 million passengers!
