New moons are exciting times for astronomy-loving or spiritual beings. Though you can’t see the Moon during this phase, it represents the start of a new lunar cycle. The entire lunar cycle includes the following lunar phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent.

If you’re into astrology, astronomy, or celestial events in general, you likely know all about the new moon. This event occurs every moon cycle, typically once a month or every 29.5 days. A new moon is the result of the Moon positioning itself between the Earth and the Sun. During this time, the Sun casts a shadow on the side of the Moon that faces Earth. This is why it appears as though the Moon fully disappears during this phase.

If you’re reading this article on the date it was published, we are currently experiencing a new moon. The next new moon, however, will take place on October 14 in the astrological sign of Libra. This is an especially significant new moon — especially since it takes place after September’s full moon (Harvest Moon) and just before October’s full moon (Hunter’s Moon). Both of those full moons carry deep spiritual symbolism and significance.

This article will detail the unique characteristics of the next new moon in October, including some ways you can take advantage of its powerful energy.

What Is a “New Moon”?

A new moon is the first phase of the lunar cycle, occurring when the Moon has the same ecliptic longitude as the Sun. The Moon is invisible from Earth at this time, as the side we normally would see from Earth is not being illuminated by the Sun. In other words, we can’t see its normal glow, making it appear as though there is no Moon in the sky at all.

Many cultures celebrated the new moon phase as a special time in the lunar cycle. It’s said that the new moon is a time to ground yourself and set intentions for the next Moon cycle. Additionally, astrologers often praise the new moon as the ideal time to manifest and call in your desires. In fact, many people will even perform rituals (like journaling, meditating, or gathering in their community) to take advantage of the new moon’s power.

In the days following the new moon, the Moon will start to appear as a sliver in the sky.

While there’s no scientific evidence that the Moon holds such magic, many people swear by it. Across Greek and Roman mythology, the Moon was often associated with mighty goddesses; and in various cultures and religions, the Moon was actually praised as a deity. For example, indigenous cultures worshiped the moon for its influence over the tides and even our emotions.

In astrology, the new moon carries strong energy and symbolizes a new chapter. Think of the new moon as a clean slate; you can completely start over and call in new manifestations that are in alignment with who and where you wish to be. Additionally, depending on its associated astrological sign, the new moon might embody different themes. Since the next new moon occurs during the Libra season, it will bring with it clarity, balance, and communication with others.

Date and Timing of the Next New Moon

The next new moon will take place on October 14, 2023, at 1:55 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time (ET) and 5:55 p.m. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The “new moon” only lasts for a few moments, but its effects remain for about a week (three days before and after the actual day). Additionally, you likely won’t see much of the Moon throughout those days. Perhaps, you’ll notice a sliver of its glow, but the Sun will cast a shadow on most of it.

If you’re into spirituality or astrology, during this time, you might consider using the new moon’s energy to align yourself with your intentions and desires. Many people like to partake in some new moon “rituals.” This might look like journaling, writing down your manifestations, meditating and visualizing your ideal future, and participating in grounding techniques.

Astrological Significance of October’s New Moon

Centuries ago, many people believed astrology and astronomy were one and the same. In fact, due to the celestial bodies’ impact on humans and nature, people classified astrology as a form of applied astronomy. Eventually, astrology became a more “taboo” topic and was ridiculed for being a pseudoscience. However, some people still believe in it to this day. In fact, it’s becoming more mainstream.

That being said, just like we all have an astrological sign that’s tied to our birthdays, we also have a “moon sign” in our astrological charts. This sign will differ depending on the Moon during your specific birth time. Your moon sign is said to embody the energies and themes of your emotional world. For instance, if your moon is in Pisces, astrologers might believe you to be might be more intuitive, sensitive, and creative.

Because the next new Moon is in the astrological sign of Libra, it is associated with the qualities and themes tied to Libras. These include harmony, extraversion, communication, and balance. Libras are often referred to as friendly yet frank individuals who practice open communication and honesty. They’re said to be relationship-orientated and place value in their connections with others.

Since the next new moon is in the sign of Libra, you might find yourself craving clarity, peace, connection, and restorative conversations with others.

How the October New Moon Might Affect Each Zodiac Sign

Each astrological sign is affected differently by each new moon. Here’s what the zodiac signs can expect from the Libra new moon, according to a professional astrologer.

Aries (March 20-April 19)

During the Libra new moon, Aries might experience clarity in their desires and relationships. Any vulnerabilities that surface can act as opportunities to grow and connect with romantic partners.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

The October new moon might highlight some patterns that no longer serve Taurus. This is a great time for Taurus to focus on their health and wellness while cultivating meaningful routines to keep them in alignment.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Now is the perfect opportunity for Gemini to prioritize self-love and self-care. In fact, Gemini should find ways to invest time in their passions or relaxation to strike a better balance.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

During this new moon, Cancer should find ways to reconnect with their roots and stick to their boundaries. This will ensure they’re acting from a loving, grounded place that suits their healing.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

During this Moon phase, Leo will benefit from clearly communicating with others with honesty and intention. Additionally, it might help Leo to release the past and take a level-headed approach toward the future.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This lunation might entail a phase of introspection for Virgo. In other words, it’s a great time for them to reflect on matters of the heart and align with their sense of self.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct 22)

This is Libra’s new moon — and they will likely realize how far they’ve come on their journey. This is a great time for self-reflection and self-gratitude.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Solitude will serve Scorpio during the October new moon. Scorpio should not neglect their intuition or spiritual growth at this time. In fact, it’s an excellent lunation to prioritize positive changes and manifest clarity.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

During the October new moon, “community” is a keyword for Sagittarius. It will serve them well to get more involved and connected with others rather than basking in solitude like Scorpio.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This new moon is all about balance for Capricorn. Known for their excellent work ethic, Capricorn can get carried away with their professional endeavors and often neglect their personal life as a result. However, this lunation will remind them of the importance of rest.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is an important phase for Aquarius to pursue new opportunities that will further their growth and healing. Aquarius might consider different perspectives and be more accepting of their mistakes or any changes in their plans.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Pisces might consider letting go of the past — including false hope — during this time. While it might be painful to shatter the faith they had in something that means a lot to them, Pisces will be on to better things as they decide to put themselves first.

New Moon Rituals and Activities

If you want to partake in healing and growth during the new moon, consider practicing one of the following rituals or activities.

Look at the new moon as a chance to start your next chapter.

Set Intentions

Setting intentions for yourself for the next lunar cycle is a great way to get into alignment with your heart and soul. This can be as simple as jotting down some habits you’d like to form or routines you’d like to stick to going forward. For example, maybe you want to practice more self-love. You can set the intention that you’ll be kinder to yourself in the coming weeks, even when you make a mistake or feel like you’re regressing. Setting intentions holds you accountable and encourages self-discipline.

Write Down Your Manifestations

New moons are thought to be the ideal time to call in your desires. You can manifest by writing down exactly what you want as though you already have it. Many people call this “scripting,” which entails writing about a situation or thing you’d like to call into your life as if it has already occurred. For example, if you want to find love, you might write a letter to yourself filled with details about your ideal lover, including how you met, how they make you feel, the types of dates you go on, etc.

Speak Affirmations

Repeating affirmations about yourself can build the confidence required to make necessary changes in your life. Statements like “I am enough,” “I deserve love,” “I respect myself,” etc. are powerful tools that can help rewire your brain to think more positively about yourself.

At the very least, pay close attention to how you speak to and about yourself. Often, we don’t even realize how negative we are when it comes to ourselves and our lives. Self-doubt often creeps into our self-talk and leads to self-sabotage — all without us even realizing it. But when we speak kind affirmations to ourselves, we train our minds to think more positively, believe in our abilities, and recognize our worth.

Meditate and Visualize

Meditating is a great way to get back in tune with your body and calm your nervous system. You will gain more clarity when you silence the external world and look inward for the answers you’re seeking. You can use guided meditations or simply listen to meditative music that calms your senses, allowing yourself to lead the way. Just be mindful of your breathing, body, and thoughts — without judging or trying to rationalize them.

Additionally, you can use your meditations as a time to visualize your ideal future, which is another form of manifesting. For example, maybe you’re trying to manifest a new job. You can visualize yourself serendipitously stumbling upon your dream job opening, nailing the interview, and receiving a job offer. Really allow yourself to feel the excitement, pride, and fulfillment as though you are actually achieving this manifestation.

Practice Grounding Techniques

While it’s important to be grounded in your everyday life, new moons are an especially important time to connect yourself with the Earth. You can ground yourself by walking barefoot on the ground, lying in the grass or sand, swimming in the ocean or a lake, and breathing deeply when outdoors as if to absorb the fresh air. This will allow you to be more present and at home in your body.

Reflect on the Last Moon Cycle

Reflection is a necessary tool for growth and healing. Because they’re the start of a new lunar cycle, you can use new moons as a time to evaluate what worked and what didn’t over the previous cycle. For example, maybe over the last cycle, you followed a stricter routine and got more work done, but you also were too rigid and lacked time for friends and loved ones. Going forward, you might tweak this approach by following a less strict schedule and making time for your personal life and passions as well.

Additionally, be honest with yourself about the patterns or habits that might be holding you back. Letting go or changing might be difficult, but it will serve you to rip the bandaid off so you can forge a new — more prosperous — path forward.

What to Expect From the Next New Moon

Though they happen every 29.5 days, each new moon presents unique opportunities for growth and fulfillment. The next new moon on October 14 will be a positive time to seek balance, harmony, and deep connections in your relationships. You can use this time to foster more self-love and move on from what no longer serves you. This will make room for all the manifestations you’re calling in.

Whether you’re into spirituality, astrology, astronomy, or none or all of the above, you can still enjoy this phase of the lunar cycle by owning your insights and stepping into the most empowered version of yourself. Happy New Moon!
