The guide can tell something is off and we quickly see the entire herd run straight by the tourists. Everyone remains calm until we see a lone lioness charging them from behind. Lions will sneak up on their prey and get as near as they can before leaping when hunting alone. When lions hunt in packs, they frequently encircle their prey, making it impossible for them to flee.

As lions hunt, they typically use stealth. They weigh a lot, and the majority of the animals they prefer as prey can run faster than lions for longer periods of time. Lions frequently have to creep up on their prey to get as close as possible before making their final lunge forward to capture it.

Lions are excellent hunters, but they also scrounge quite a bit of their food because it’s frequently simpler than going hunting. The prey animals that lions can kill when they hunt in packs can be up to ten times bigger than the lions themselves.

How Large Do Buffalos Get?

Bison and buffalo are both very big animals. Bison species are generally larger than buffalo, with weights of up to 2,000 pounds. African buffalo are usually about 5 feet tall and weigh up to 1,800 pounds, which is similar to domesticated water buffalo.

The biggest wild bull on record weighed 2,800 pounds (1,270 kg), and in captivity, the largest bison reached a whopping 3,801 pounds (1,724 kg).

These impressive animals can stand up to 6 feet at the hump.

In a pride, the female lions, known as lionesses, are the main hunters.

Although lionesses are significantly smaller than male lions, this does not in any way affect them because they are far faster and more nimble than the massive, heavy male lions, making them better hunters.

When chasing an animal, lionesses may run at a speed of about 50 miles per hour. In general, male lions appear to be less active than lionesses, some might even say lazier, especially in terms of hunting.

Although the majority of the buffalo get away, one sneaky lioness goes head-to-head with one of these horned creatures. Buffalos can weigh between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds, outweighing these large cats. That doesn’t stop this feline from going in for the kill.

At one point, it appears that the buffalo is scaring off the lioness. We then see two male lions appear, which is strange. Lions are incredibly territorial and will kill any other male in or near their pride, including cubs.

It’s best to assume two prides were hunting together. As soon as this big buffalo turns its back, the cats run towards it to take it down as a team. The lions dig in their large claws and begin jumping on the buffalo’s back to bring it to the ground.

Is This Normal Behavior for Lions and Buffalo?

Lions will go after a variety of animals, some of which are buffalo, antelope, zebras, and wildebeest. When they attack a buffalo, it is common for them to do so in a group as it makes it easier and faster to acquire this large prey. Because buffalo are so large, it can take upward of an hour to complete the takedown. However, there are times when lions will lose their catches, either to other animals that are hunting nearby like hyenas, or when they begin to fight within their group, as shown in the video below.

There are numerous incidents where the buffalo does survive an attack. In one account, a buffalo that endured a lengthy four-hour attack incredulously survived by dragging the lions into a water source and eventually impaled one lion on its horns. This is all normal behavior for these animals.
