Hippos are incredibly dangerous, unpredictable, and wildly aggressive creatures. Unless you’re one of them, it’s best to stay out of their way. The bull shark in the video below didn’t get the memo. It was hyper-focused on something else when it made its way into the bloat of hippos.

What Do Bull Sharks Eat?
Bull sharks don’t have what you would call a delicate palate. They eat fish primarily, but they may even turn on their own species on rare occasions. They also feast on other types of sharks and marine mammals. They have even ventured toward crocodiles and alligators, effectively killing them. However, crocodiles and alligators have also killed bull sharks. These sharks prefer warmer environments and can be found throughout the world in shallow ocean waters and in freshwater rivers.
How Do Hippos Fight Opponents?
Not only are hippos intimidatingly huge, but they also have razor-sharp teeth. They use water as a weapon, pooling it into their large mouths and tossing it onto their opponent. This only happens if another animal gets too close or if they fight one another but often, they use intimidating tactics like roaring, snorting, charging, and growling. Any life-preserving animal that encounters these enormous creatures should know to retreat — unless it’s the bull shark in the video below.
Bull Shark vs. Hippos
When the video starts, the narrator shares that the safari tourists in the background are about to get “the sighting of their lives.” There are at least seven hippos in the water when you see a bull shark cut through the water right in their midst. The narrator goes on to share that hippos have the strongest bite force of all mammals, and you see several close-up images of these horrifying animals as they open their mouths wide. He then shares that bull sharks have the strongest bite force of all sharks — and they’re about to face off.
St. Lucia is the location of the biggest tidal wetlands in Africa and it’s where the next scene takes place. Here, the water is shallow and there is a mix between freshwater and saltwater. This environment is ideal for bull sharks. You can see how the bull shark in the video continuously goes after the hippos in the water, seemingly fearless. The narrator explains the shark was likely going after a fish when it caught the hippos by surprise. It just goes to show that even the deadliest animal in Africa can startle when a bolder animal approaches it.
