You can’t help but smile at this wonderful clip of an interaction between two gorilla brothers. One is calmly eating his lunch and minding his own business. The other decides that he wants to wind his brother up so he runs past and smacks him over the head for no reason whatsoever.
Check out the video to see the full hilarious footage of gorilla brothers having a bit of a moment in their enclosure.
What Exactly Are Gorillas?
Gorillas are one of the greater apes along with orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos. Even though both monkeys and apes are primates, they differ in some important ways. For example, apes have no tails but have a larger body size and weight. The apes also have a more upright body posture and a broader chest. The great apes, such as gorillas, tend to live more on the ground than in trees.
You may be surprised to know that humans are more closely related to chimpanzees and gorillas than either of these two animals orangutans!
How Many Species of Gorillas Are There?
The two species of gorilla are the Eastern gorilla and the Western gorilla. However, the Eastern gorilla can be divided into the mountain gorilla and the Eastern lowland gorilla subspecies. Also, the Western gorilla species can be divided into the cross-river gorilla and the western lowland gorilla subspecies.
They all live in tropical and subtropical regions of the African continent. In reality, the species are very similar except for their size and the noises that they make. Eastern gorillas are normally larger.
What Do Gorillas Normally Eat?
One of the gorillas in this clip was calmly eating when he was attacked by his brother! Even though they are large and very powerful animals, gorillas are primarily herbivores. They can digest a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The majority of their diet is made up of leaves, stems, and shoots. However, they will also eat pith, fruit, and flowers. If they come across ants, termites, and grubs then they will happily feast on them as well.
To find their food, gorillas use their sight, smell, taste, and touch. Sight and smell are probably the most important senses for them when foraging. They can detect different colors and that enables them to work out which plants are ripe. Unfortunately, this gorilla’s eyesight didn’t enable him to see his brother approaching!
How Big Do Gorillas Get?
Of the two species, eastern and western, the eastern gorilla is often the larger of the two species. The eastern gorilla has two subspecies, the mountain gorilla and the eastern lowland gorilla. The largest of these is the eastern lowland gorilla, also known as Grauer’s gorilla. A fully-grown male eastern gorilla typically weighs between 309 and 453 pounds and stands 5.6 feet tall, while a fully-grown female will weigh between 200 and 220 pounds and stand 4.9 feet tall.
