This rattlesnake expert gets a surprise call from his own wife and kid! There is a rattlesnake in a playground and he needs to get there fast before it disappears or another parent discovers it and decides to take matters into their own hands. When he arrives, he finds a pack rat nest that would make a perfect den for a rattlesnake. Soon he hears the give-away rattle sound.

After some digging around he uncovers a large, female (extremely annoyed) western diamondback rattlesnake. The expert explains that normally the snake would just have been left in situ in this sort of environment. However, this is a playground and therefore an area where there are a lot of children making relocation the most sensible option.

Where Do Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes Live?

This footage was captured in Arizona but Western diamondback rattlesnakes are found in many areas in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. In terms of habitat, you are most likely to come across them in arid desert and semi-desert environments. It is typical for them to be hiding underneath things such as rocks, debris and pack rat nests! This species is not endangered and has a thriving and stable population.

Nevertheless, the rattlesnake roundups conducted in some locations still have the potential to damage local ecosystems because they remove so many of one species over a short period of time.

How to Avoid Getting Bitten by a Rattlesnake

The top piece of advice is to always call in the experts if you come across a rattlesnake on your property. There are also plenty of things that you can do to avoid rattlesnake bites when you are out and about. Start by wearing boots and long pants when you are hiking. Hiking boots also offer better protection from bites than shoes.

Stay on trails rather than poking around in underbrush and tall weeds. This is where snakes are likely to be hiding out waiting to lunge at prey. If you do come across a snake – leave it alone! Some snakes can look as if they are dead when they are only resting. Believe it or not, freshly killed snakes can still bite you through a reflexive action!
