What Exactly Are Donkeys?

The scientific name for donkeys is Equus Asinus and they are a member of the Equidae family which is the same family as horses. They were first domesticated in Egypt and North Africa around 5,000 years ago. They were initially used for providing meat and milk but soon became working animals that were used to carry people and goods. These animals were more suited to this sort of work than horses because they were more sure-footed. They are also stronger than horses of the same size. All of our current domesticated donkey stock are descended from African wild donkeys.

What Do Donkeys Normally Look Like?

As you can see from the collection in this clip, they come in many different colors and sizes. A typical donkey is anything between 36 inches and 46 inches to the shoulder. They can weigh between 400 and 500 pounds. Having said that, the Sicilian donkey is much smaller and reaches only 24 inches. At the other end of the scale is the Mammoth Stock donkey which reaches 56 inches to the shoulder on weighs a massive 950 pounds.

Their coloration is very variable, and they can be anything from white to gray to black including browns, and creams. Most have a dark stripe down their backs that reaches from their mane to their tail. They are also known for having long ears that help to cool them down in warm climates.

What Do They Normally Eat?

Donkeys are herbivores and therefore live off plant material. Domestic donkeys are fed a variety of food that includes hay, grains, grasses, and oats. However, if they get the chance, they will also feed on shrubs. These guys have a reputation for eating a lot and can put away 6,000 pounds of food in a year.

Do Donkeys Actually Laugh?

No, donkeys cannot laugh or smile. They sound as if they are laughing but it is just their normal vocalization and facial expression. These animals bare their teeth and curl up their top lip so they look as if they are laughing! This one may be using their bray to express surprise!
