Most people with this disease don’t display any symptoms, and it is considered almost completely harmless to most people. However, the virus can cause serious birth defects if the mother is infected during pregnancy.
West Nile Virus
The West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. Any species can technically carry it, but the Culex species primarily transmits it.
Most people with West Nile Virus don’t have symptoms and recover without knowing they have it. However, it can cause severe neurological damage and death in some cases.
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted through the Aedes and Haemagogus mosquito species. It can be a serious health problem in the tropical regions of the world, where it is primarily transmitted.
Luckily, there is a vaccination for yellow fever.
On top of these diseases, several others can be transmitted via mosquitoes, such as chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis.
Alternatives to Mosquitoes

If mosquitoes were to go extinct, other insects would likely fill their role in the food chain. However, it is difficult to predict exactly how this would play out and the overall impact.
A slow extinction would give animals time to adapt and find a new food source. A quick extinction likely would lead to the extinction of other species, as they wouldn’t have the time to adapt. Some species may even benefit from the extinction of mosquitoes, but this may also damage other species.

Bonus: Why Do Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others?
Maybe you are one of those lucky people who seldom suffer from mosquito bites. Or, maybe you are a person who buys Benadryl spray by the gallon because you are covered in itchy welts after being outside for five minutes. If you are one of the frequently bitten you may wonder – why me? Science has recently provided us with some answers:
- You’re type “O” blood. In a 2004 study, researchers released mosquitoes to a buffet of humans and watched what happened. The mosquitoes landed on people with type O blood twice as often as those with A, B, and AB.
- You inherited genes that give your blood type away. Around 85% of people give off a chemical signal through their skin that signals their blood type. If you have this unfortunate trait – it cancels out any benefit of not having O blood.
- You are a large person who exhales more carbon dioxide. This doesn’t have anything to do with being overweight – adults are bitten more than children. Mosquitos can smell carbon dioxide from half a football field away – so, the more you exhale the more they smell. Maybe football players suffer bites for their sport?
- You recently exercised or have a high metabolism. Speaking of football players – all athletes and people who work up a sweat are mosquito magnets. Chemicals found in sweat, like lactic acid, uric acid, and ammonia lure mosquitos and turn you into prey.
- You’re pregnant. Just another thing to make you suffer in addition to all the rest – mosquitoes bite pregnant women twice as often as other people. If you have type O blood and are pregnant you may as well just stay inside.
- You are drinking a beer. Nobody knows why – but mosquitoes love a good brewsky.
- You’re wearing dark colors. Mosquitoes see dark objects more easily than light – so wear white if you don’t want to attract their attention.
