Food chains show the complex, interconnected relationships between all living things in our ecosystem. Each aspect of the food chain, including producers, consumers, and decomposers, all contribute to a more balanced flow of energy and nutrients.

Ducks swim in Colorado's Echo Canyon Reservoir, a lake near Pagosa Springs, close to the border with New Mexico, with the San Juan Mountains, part of the Rocky Mountains, and trees, in summer 2024.

In our five-day unit plan, students will investigate what makes up a food chain, including diving deeper into the unique characteristics of producers, consumers and decomposers, creating their own food chains and exploring more about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
