Coyotes belong to the genus Canis which includes many other extant species like wolves, dogs and golden jackals. This canine is in the family Canis latrans of which there are more than 19 recognized subspecies and are one of the most widely distributed mammals in North America. These are:
Western Coyotes – there are 6 found in North America which are the Northern, the Mountain, the Darker Northwest and 3 almost identical subspecies found on the west coast.
Central American Coyote – Central America and Mexico have 7 different species. These are the Tiburon and 6 almost identical subspecies of the Mexican, Belize, Colima, Durango, Honduras and Salvador.
Eastern Coyote – there are 2 of these species which are the Northeastern and the Southeastern.
Central U.S. Coyote – there are 4 different species found in the central states which are the Plains, the Texas Plains, the Mearns and the lower Rio Grande.
The coyote is an important figure in Native American culture and plays an integral role in Navajo mythology and folklore. This canine is an animal representative of both good and evil, human and god, and is a culmination of the characteristics of all of these things. They are also a concept of harmony and order in their culture. The coyote may feature a prominent role in culture, but here also are interesting additional facts:

The Plains coyote is the largest subspecies with the largest fangs.
