What is the origin of the Doberman Pinscher breed?
The Doberman pinscher originated in Germany where it was first bred in the late 1800s by a tax collector named Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann who also ran the dog pound in his town of Apolda. He wanted to create a breed of dog that would protect him as he made his rounds collecting taxes. While the exact breeds he used to arrive at the Doberman are not known, many guess that he may have mixed multiple breeds for their positive attributes – the now-extinct old German Shepherd, the Rottweiler, the German Pinscher and the Weimaraner. What is known is that he chose the breeds that were the most intelligent, strongest, and robust.
Around the early 1900s, the original breed was eventually crossed with the Greyhound and the black and tan Manchester Terrier to give it yet another advantage, its sleek appearance, and today is one of the most recognized breeds worldwide.
What is the traditional Doberman Pinscher’s coat color?
This breed is referred to as just the Dobermann, with the extra ‘n’ for its creator, in all areas of the world with the exception of North America where it is known as the Doberman Pinscher. North America aside, they no longer use the word ‘Pinscher’ because this word, which means terrier in German, no longer represents the breed. Read on to find out more interesting facts!
There are drill teams for this breed. They practice for hours and perform for large crowds using props and perform obedience exercises.
They were used as war dogs in both World War I and World War II for finding wounded soldiers.
This dog was trained to carry messages during these wars and would play an essential role in reconnaissance missions.
Their cropped ears were intended to make them more intimidating but this has been banned in many countries due to it being cruel.
