Choosing the Best Vegan Dog Food What to Look For

There is still some confusion about vegan dog food, but research shows that your dog CAN survive solely on plant proteins. There are, however, some important factors to keep in mind when choosing the best vegan food. Here are some that we applied when carrying out this review.

Life Stage and Breed

The age and breed of your puppy should play a key role when choosing the best vegan food. Dogs need different protein contents at different ages. You must select a vegan food that fulfills this need to keep your dog healthy.

Ingredients

As we said a bit earlier, some nutrients like taurine and L-carnitine are present in animal protein. Your dog needs these ingredients, but they are not in most plant proteins. The best vegan food for your dog is one that adds these important nutrients as a supplement.

Price

While vegan dog food is a bit on the expensive side, the benefits far outweigh this price. This is especially true for dogs with animal protein allergies. Feeding your dog wholesome food is much better than paying for a vet visit all the time because they are sick.

The Different Types of Vegan Dog Food: Pros and Cons Compared

Vegan dog food comes in mainly wet and dry types. Some factors to consider when choosing which is best are the age of your dog and its preferences. Below, we’ve listed the pros and cons of wet and dry dogs to help you decide which works best for your dog.

Dry Dog Food

ProsCons
Easy to preserve.Does not help with hydration.
Less expensive.Could contain a huge amount of carbohydrates.
Great for your dog’s oral health.
Comes in many size varieties.

Wet Dog Food

ProsCons
Great for dog’s hydration.Has to be refrigerated and used quickly after opening.
Contains a higher amount of protein than dry.Won’t benefit your dog’s oral health.
Easier for puppies and senior dogs to eat because of soft nature.A bit more expensive.

Halo Holistic Chicken-Free Garden of Vegan Recipe

Many Halo Holistic Testers say that this dog food saved their dog’s life. Here’s what one had to say, “My dog has suffered from constant allergies for years. He chews and licks his feet all the time and when I say all the time I mean anytime you see him he’s usually licking or chewing his feet. I have tried literally every food, I have tried oils, (I did try some fish oil that did seem to help for a short amount of time but didn’t last long) and I have tried every supplement on the market. I am vegan so because of that I thought that maybe I would try a vegan diet to see how it worked. My dog no longer suffers. He stopped chewing his feet after one week. He used to have really bad gas and he no longer does. I want to cry because this has been a miracle.”

One tester, however, complained that the 21lb bag was not resealable, which made preservation after opening harder. “21 LB BAG IS NOT RESEALABLE! Smaller sizes (4lb and 10lb) have pressed to seal. The 21lb bag does not. Chewy should mention this in the description. I am also contacting HALO. Paid over 3 per lb for a 21 lb bag. My dogs (and me) love the product, and have used it for over 3 years.

Gather Endless Valley Vegan Dry Dog Food

Testers of this food love it for its non-GMO content. “My dogs love this food and are thriving on it. Can’t say I’ve tasted it for the flavor stars, but given how fast my dogs eat it, I’m guessing it tastes pretty good. I thought it was pretty expensive, but it’s worth the price for organic, non-GMO ingredients.

You might have to skip this food if your dog is allergic to yeast. One tester says, “thought I would try this one for a slight change. My little dog seemed to really like the taste however she became itchier while eating it . I think it’s all the added Yeast in this recipe. This seems to be a good vegetarian food; it just did not work for my extremely allergy-prone dog.

V-Dog Vegan Dry Dog Food

One dog parent who decided to try V-Dog Vegan says it was the best decision ever. “So happy I made the switch to this food. My 8-1/2 y/o Husky/Pit mix was showing signs of aging – digestive issues, his fur was lackluster, and over the winter he sprained his elbow twice running in the snow. I started looking into senior foods and had started him on a joint supplement when it hit me that I’m a vegan, why not try it for him. Literally the first week, his digestive issues were gone, his fur was softer and shedding less – which is amazing considering the Husky in him – and he is running around like he did well before he had his first sprain injury. He LOVES this food and I LOVE the effects it has had on his health. We will be sticking with it from here on out.”

Some picky dogs did not however love this vegan food variety. “I have tried various brands of dry dog food because our Spike is picky. He won’t eat this one either unless I mix something in with it.”

V-Dog Mini Bites Vegan Dry Dog Food

V-Dog Mini Bites are great for small breed dogs. Our dog parents who tested this food loved it. “My 14-year-old dachshund has a delicate digestive system. Through the years, I have spent literally thousands of dollars on prescription and off-the-shelf dog foods, medications, vet bills, and overnight hospital stays when Stuart would go into a full-on digestive crisis. Meaning he would stop eating, suffer from nausea, have terrific bloody diarrhea, and would get incredibly dehydrated. I finally, after trying every animal protein dog food in every combination of ingredients known to man, came to the conclusion that he cannot tolerate animal protein – any animal protein. So, to the naysayers that say dogs are carnivorous, you may be right. You put a steak and a bowl of vegan food in front of my dog and he will probably go for the steak. And then he will get very sick. No thank you. He really likes the V-dog kibble food and eats the whole portion served.

Testers, however, wished this company made a wet version of this food and that it was a little less expensive. As one says, “I wish that they produced a canned version as well to supplement, and give him some variety. The only other consideration is that the cost is fairly high, especially when you consider “it’s only veggies” after all. For what it is, it’s great food, and I highly recommend it for your dog.”

Halo Holistic Garden of Vegan Canned Dog Food

Testers of Halo Holistic had nothing but glowing reviews to give. “My 4.5lb chihuahua has been on this brand for a year now and it’s been a game-changer. The best food for her yet. I’ve played with food options and have even cooked her food for a while because of the many sensitivities she has and when I found this brand I noticed all the ingredients fit her criteria so I gave it a try and it’s been the best decision I’ve made. She absolutely loves it and she’s the healthiest she’s ever been. Her hair is long thick and glowing, her energy levels are through the roof as a 6yr who still plays like a puppy, and her bowel movements are the most consistent and solid they’ve ever been. I’m a huge fan of this food and hope they never go away.”There was a complaint about not being able to get all of the food out of the can. “My pups love this so I mix it in with their vegan kibble. I love the flip lid. Very difficult to get everything out of the can, so some go to waste.
