If your dog loves playing outdoors, then you’ll need to make sure he doesn’t suffer on super hot days. Of course, your pup’s priorities aren’t exactly staying in the shade and keeping himself hydrated. A dog pool is just the thing to help him cool off while having a spot of fun under the sun. Of course, there’s more to a dog pool than just a tool to beat the heat. You can use it for other purposes as well. You can bathe your pup in it. Your backyard is definitely roomier than your bathroom. Moreover, your pool is a good tool for teaching your pooch how to swim, especially if he’s afraid of water.

Now, one would think that choosing a dog pool should be a piece of cake. However, not all dog pools are created equal. There are ones ideal for large dogs and portable pools that you can take with you on the road. Dog pools also come in a variety of materials such as hard plastic, metal, and puncture-proof PVC. These pools also come in various shapes – round, oval, rectangular, and even paw-shaped. The ultimate pool for your pooch is a matter of preference – yours and your dog’s. To find out what suits the two of you best, below is a list of features to consider.

What to Look for When Buying a Dog Pool

Are you looking for a pool that’s for swimming or just wading? If you want to get your dog a pool for swimming, you’ll need to get one that’s big and deep enough for your pup to paddle in. A shallow pool is ideal if you only plan to use it as a place for your dog to cool off and take a bath in.

The size of your dog pool will depend on several factors. Aside from what you plan your dog to do in the pool (wade or swim), you also need to take into account the size of your dog and the space you have available. Obviously, you’ll need to make sure the dimensions of the pool will allow your dog to play comfortably inside the pool. For example, if you’re looking for a dog pool for small dogs, you still need to consider how active he’s going to be inside it, how much space he’ll need to splash around without hitting the sides of the pool. Moreover, the size of the pool should be able to fit in your backyard, front yard, or wherever outdoor space you plan on placing the pool.

Dog’s Activity Level

Manufacturers use different materials such as PVC, hard plastic, and metal to make dog poos. Heavy duty PVC should be tough enough to withstand getting scratched by excited paws which makes them ideal for well-behaved dogs. However, if your pup is more of the hyperactive type or one who loves to chew on things, then you should choose a pool made out of metal or hard plastic. And if you plan on getting an inflatable one, make sure to look for something that’s puncture-proof.

It’s important that you keep an eye on your pooch whenever he’s playing outside, especially if you have a pool on the premises. However, if you aren’t sure about being able to supervise your dog’s water activities, make sure to stick to a shallow pool where there’s no chance of your pup drowning.

Ease of Use

How easy is it for your dog to get in and out of the pool? A big, deep pool of water may require a specially-designed ramp for your dog. A pool for wading or cooling off should have sides that your pup can easily jump over. In addition, you’ll need to consider how easy the pool is to fill with water and to store away, if possible.

When we started looking for the best overall dog pool in the market, we decided that we’d like to find one that is easy to set up, durable, slip-resistant, and available in multiple sizes. After days of testing various options, we finally found one that fit all of our requirements and more – the Jasonwell Foldable Dog Pool.

It’s made of extra-tough, thick PVC which makes it puncture-proof, less likely to get scratched by your puppy’s claws. The sides feature thick, high-density fiberboard which allowed it to stand firmly on its own while we filled it up with water. We loved how easy it was to set up and clear away. There is a side drain that allowed us to quickly get rid of most of the dirty water after a fun-filled day in the sun. We did find that we had to tilt it a bit to get the last bit of water out. Other than that, the whole thing required little effort from us.

The pool comes in five different sizes – S (32″), M (39.5″), L (48″), XL (55″), and XXL (63″). The XXL is perfect for large dogs – more than one at a time. You even get a carrying case which makes it portable, though we found the bag to be a bit flimsy. All in all, we consider this to be the ultimate dog pool in the market today.

The Petmaker Pet Dog Pool - Foldable with Carrying Bag is quite similar to the Jasonwell model – a foldable dog pool made of industrial-grade PVC material. But there are some differences. We loved the color of this dog pool; it certainly made our backyard look brighter. The pool is a tad cheaper which makes it easier on the wallet. And it only comes in two sizes – medium (30.5 inches) and large (47 inches). The last one isn’t really a bad thing, but if you plan on having dog pool parties, you’re better off with the Jasonwell Dog Pool.

During our testing, we found the Pet Pool quite easy to use, whether we were setting it up or putting it away. There’s a wide mouth drain on the side that makes emptying the pool out effortless. The pool comes with a carry bag, allowing us to bring it to a friend’s place for an impromptu pool party or on the road to serve as a doggy bathtub.

Colorful, durable, portable, and budget-friendly. All the features you expect from a good dog pool. The only drawback we could find with this pick is the fact that it’s not ideal for large dogs who weigh more than 80lbs.

KOPEKS Outdoor Rectangular Swimming Pool Bathing Tub - Portable Foldable - Small 31" x 20" - Grey,Small (Pack of 1),KPS-1085

  • HEAVY-DUTY, DURABLE MATERIAL: High-Grade, Industrial Strength PVC
  • PORTABLE: Easily folds. Perfect to take anywhere!

If a round dog pool does not fit in your available space, maybe a rectangular one will do. And the best pick in this category is KOPEKS Outdoor Rectangular Swimming Pool. Like our other best picks, this dog pool is also made of industrial strength PVC material. The sides are able to stay up on their own, even if the pool was empty of water which made it easier to set up.

During our testing, we found that this pool was more suitable for small dogs and medium-sized ones. A large dog, such as a Rottweiler, would find it hard to splash around comfortably inside it. That being said, it’s perfect if your large breed prefers to lounge in the water than play in it.

Aside from using it as a water play area, we discovered other uses for this pool. On cold days, we could use it as a sandbox where your pup can dig for treasures. Or you can use it in your shower stall as a “faux” tub if you ever need a soak. Some customers have even used it as a washtub whenever they’re spending time in the great outdoors.

While we’re not a huge fan of this particular dog pool compared to others we’ve tested, we do recommend it if you are only able to buy a rectangular one.

Does your dog love playing with your sprinkler and splashing in the water? You can give him the best of both worlds – a mini-pool and a sprinkler – with the Peteast Splash Sprinkler Pad for Dogs.

This splash pad is made of 100% high-quality environmentally-friendly PVC material. It is non-toxic, free of BPA and phthalates. The bottom is 0.5mm thick to make it more durable while your pet’s splashing about. There’s an inflatable ring surrounding the pad that fills up with water, creating a shallow pool in the center where it also accumulates. The ring itself features holes where the water sprinkles out from.

Our dogs clearly loved this splash pad. They could lounge and get “rained” on to keep themselves cool. We adjusted the water pressure to see how much it affected the fountain. We liked how it allowed us to lessen the “splash” on the sides, keeping most of the water inside the pool. If your dog is scared of water, you can slowly introduce him to the splash pad just by lowering the water pressure.

The splash pad comes in several sizes – small, medium, and large. You can use this for small dogs, medium-sized ones, and even large breeds. The cost of the splash pad isn’t exactly budget-friendly. But since it’s a source of ultimate fun, we reckon it’s well worth the price. The only drawback to this splash pad is that the inflatable ring is not puncture-proof. So, it’s best to keep an eye on your pet to make sure he doesn’t create an unwanted leak.

Best Dog Pools: Reviewed for 2021 FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What type of pool is best for dogs?

Most dogs love to play in the water. But not all of them have the same level of confidence when it comes to playing in the pool. Some dogs prefer to just wade in the water while others prefer swimming. The best type of pool for dogs is one that is suited to your and his particular situation.

If you are planning on getting an in-ground pool, a fiberglass one would be best. This material can prevent your pet’s paws from scratching the surface of the pool. You should also consider getting wide-open steps to make it easier for your pet to get in and out of your in-ground pool. However, if you already have a pool built, installing a dog ramp would allow him to safely exit the pool as soon as he’s done swimming.

If you don’t have the space for an in-ground pool, you can choose one from several types of above-ground dog pools. Folding pools are best if you want something portable, easily stored, and puncture-proof. Rigid pools are more durable, typically made up of hard plastic. This type of pool can withstand very enthusiastic dogs. Even with scratches, you won’t have to worry about any leaks. However, rigid pools are not easy to transport and store away.

Now, there are inflatable dog pools in the market. And they’re pretty easy to use. Once inflated, filling it up with water is easy. However, no matter how strong the material is, an inflatable pool is still vulnerable to getting punctured. Plus, you’ll need to get the right air pump to help you inflate your dog’s pool.

If your dog is not into lounging in a pool and would prefer to run around in water, then a splash pad might be the best choice. The sprinklers of a splash pad can help them cool off. The pad can typically hold a shallow pool of water that your dog can roll around in.

As you can see, there’s really no best type of pool for your dog. It all depends on your situation and your dog’s preference.

What is the best above ground pool for dogs?

The best overall above-ground pool for dogs is, in our humble opinion, the Jasonwell Foldable Dog Pool. It’s easy to use, very durable, and can be stored away. It comes in several sizes to fit any breed and level of dog activity. Moreover, it easily fits in anyone’s budget.

Are swimming pools good for dogs?

Most dogs love to play in the water. And there’s no question that splashing about and swimming are good exercises for your pooch. But what about the chlorine in the pool? Well, as long as the amount of chlorine in the pool is at a normal amount, then it’s safe for your dog to play around your swimming pool.

However, it is important to note that there is still a significant danger to allowing your pet to swim in your pool. You should never allow them to swim unsupervised because it’s still possible for your dog to drown. He might suddenly feel tired or panic while swimming and become unable to get out on his own. Aside from the steps, you should provide your pooch an alternative way to get in and out of the water easily. Installing a ramp will do that.

Can dogs swim in inflatable pools?

Yes, dogs can swim in inflatable pools. In fact, there are some that are specifically designed for your pet’s enjoyment. These typically have heavier, thicker plastic to make it more durable. However, they are still vulnerable to your dog’s teeth and paws. If you have a dog that has a tendency to scratch and/or chew on things, an inflatable pool might not be the best option for you.
