Parakeets are intelligent birds that thrive on interaction and companionship. They are affectionate pets and enjoy the attention of their people, and male parakeets can be trained to talk. They also are active and need space to play, fly, and hop around to be happy.

Parakeets have great personalities. They come in a rainbow of colors and a range of different sizes. Smaller parakeets, like budgies, can be comfortable in a smaller cage, but the more space you can give your parakeets, the happier they will be.

To take care of these affectionate pets, parakeets need perches, feeding and drinking bowls, something to chew on, a swing, some toys, a birdbath (every three days or so), and something to line the bottom of the cage

The minimum dimensions for a cage for a single parakeet are 25 x 25 x 50 inches. However, bigger is better. The smallest recommended cage size for a pair of parakeets is 50 inches long x 50 inches high x 100 inches wide.

Our 2022 reviews are updated to include the best parakeets cages for a happy bird.

4. Best for Clear Assembly Instructions: Yaheetech 54-inch Wrought Iron Bird Cage With Stand

This spacious, solid birdcage is made with hammer-tone paint-covered metal to make it water-resistant. Bar spacing of 0.4 inches makes it safe for your small birds, preventing them from squeezing through the bars and possibly injuring themselves.

The locks on both the large front and smaller inner doors are specially made to prevent your clever parakeet from letting itself out. The bars are 0.08 of an inch thick, so your birds cannot bite through them.

It is a larger cage, so the rolling casters make it easier to move. However, you can also detach it from the mobile stand to place it on the floor or on top of furniture. You can also remove the stand and place the cage directly on the roller. The stand includes extra storage to keep the area around your birdcage neat.

Two polished wooden perches provide spaces for your birds to rest. A grate between your birds and the droppings tray keeps your pets out of their droppings and a slide-out tray makes it easy to clean.

Choosing the Best: What to Look for

When choosing the best parakeet cage, there are three factors you will want to consider. Specifically:

  • Is it easy to assemble?
  • Is it sturdy and safe?
  • Is it big enough for the number of parakeets I have?

Is It Easy To Assemble?

Unless you pick up your birdcage at a pet store and it is already assembled, you will have to put it together. It is essential that your cage fits together well. Extra gaps can be dangerous for your parakeets – they can try to escape and end up hurting themselves. Sharp, uncovered metal ends could also be potentially harmful. If everything fits together well, your cage will be sturdier and safer.

Is It Sturdy and Safe?

The gaps between your cage’s posts should be a maximum of half an inch to keep your parakeets safe. If some of the gaps are larger, your birds will try and escape. You also want to be able to move your cage easily and not worry about it wobbling or being too fragile. Some birds will chew on the bars of the cage to try and escape, so you want sturdy bars covered in non-toxic paint. A solid and well-constructed cage is critical for keeping your parakeets safe.

Is It Big Enough for the Number of Parakeets I Have?

To stay healthy and happy, parakeets need space to hop, play, and fly. You want to include plenty of toys, including a mirror and have sufficient space for your birds to move around. With bird cages, the bigger, the better.

The Different Types of Parakeets Cages: Pros and Cons Compared

Aside from selecting a cage for your parakeets that is large enough, well-constructed, and has a maximum of half an inch bar spacing, there are two basic types of parakeets cages, closed top and an open roof.

Here are some pros and cons of each type.

Closed Top

PROSCONS
Plenty of room to hang toys and mirrors from the top of the cage
Simple design with many different cages to choose from
May be easier to assemble

Open Play Roof

PROSCONS
Parakeets love to perch as high as possiblePoorly constructed roof perches can fall and hurt your pet
The open roof gives you easy access to play and interact with your pets
Adds effective space to your cage
