Welcome to our Chimpanzee Quiz! This is the ultimate test of your knowledge about our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom!
With this quiz, you’ll have the chance to challenge yourself and see how much you really know about these amazing primates. Scientists and animal enthusiasts alike continue to be fascinated by chimpanzees because of their amazing intelligence and sophisticated social habits.
This quiz covers a wide range of chimpanzee-related topics, from their diet and behavior to their habitats.
So, get ready to put your knowledge to the test and learn some new facts about our primate cousins!
Like the evolution of many other primates, it is believed that the evolution of chimpanzees started with the split between the catarrhines, which include Old World monkeys and apes, and the platyrrhines, commonly known as New World monkeys, 25–40 million years ago.
According to a 2017 genomic analysis, the ancestors of central and eastern chimpanzees may have received ancient gene flow from bonobos between 200 and 550 thousand years ago. Around six million years ago, the human line’s last common ancestor and the chimpanzee line diverged.
The study of human evolution has undergone a revolution thanks to DNA analysis. By comparing the human genome to the genomes of other great apes, it has been convincingly established that chimpanzees and bonobos are our closest relatives, with whom we share approximately 99 percent of our DNA.
Despite this diversity, wild chimpanzees typically have less than 15 years of life expectancy at birth, and the average adult lifetime (after sexual maturation) is only approximately 15 years. While this may seem young, wild animals do not have proper care thus their life expectancy plummets.
Little Mama and João are the oldest known chimpanzees kept in captivity. Joao is still alive and is in his mid-to-late seventies, while Little Mama was in her late seventies or early eighties. Auntie Rose, who passed away at the age of 63, was the oldest wild chimpanzee we are aware of.
According to the Center for Great Apes, while chimpanzees’ average lifespan is about 15 years, they can live 40 to 50 years in the wild and 50 to 60 years in captivity.
The most fascinating animals on the planet, chimpanzees are renowned for their intelligence, social abilities, and physical prowess. Because chimpanzees and humans are each other’s closest living relatives, they are an endlessly intriguing subject of study.
With that said, here are five cool facts about chimps:
Chimpanzees share between 95 to 98 percent of their DNA with humans.
The natural habitat of wild chimpanzees is exclusive to Africa.
Chimpanzees have a diet that consists of both plant and animal matter.
Chimpanzees exhibit complex social and family structures.
Chimpanzees have the potential to live up to 80 years old.
Chimpanzees are known for their use of what type of communication?
