Interesting Facts About the Dutch Shepherd
Dutch Shepherds are:
Dutch Shepherd Origins
The Dutch Shepherd, hailing from the Netherlands, is a herding dog renowned for its versatility. Originally bred to assist shepherds and farmers, this dog possesses remarkable adaptability and thrives in challenging and austere conditions. It was precisely their ability to endure and perform with minimal requirements that made them indispensable to those in need.
While the precise origins of the Dutch Shepherd remain somewhat uncertain, there is a prevailing belief that they share ancestry with the herding dogs responsible for the creation of the Belgian Shepherd and German Shepherd breeds. It is believed that the Dutch Shepherd was initially developed in the southern region of the Netherlands during the early 1800s.
Furthermore, the breeding of Dutch Shepherds experienced a significant setback during World War II, with the turmoil of the conflict causing a halt in breeding activities and resulting in the unfortunate loss of many dogs.
The breed came dangerously close to extinction during this period. While dedicated enthusiasts managed to revive breeding programs after the war, the Dutch Shepherd remains a rare breed to this day.
