The Indian Cobra is a species of snake in the family Elapidae of which there are more than 360 species and over 170 subspecies. This snake is in the genus Naja, which are known as the true cobras, and has around 38 species, which includes the Naja Naja. There are many other species of Elapidae that are called cobras but they are not “true cobras”, like the king cobra ( (Ophiophagus hannah), as they do not belong to the Naja genus.
Naja Naja is considered to be the original model on which all cobra species are based on and all species of Naja were originally thought to be the one species, Indian Cobra. These species were only recently divided further into their own groups. Here are just a few species in the Naja genus:
Monocled cobra (Najakaouthia)
Andaman spitting cobra (Naja sagittifera)
Caspian cobra (Naja oxiana)
Chinese cobra (Naja atra)
Sumatran spitting cobra (Naja sumatrana)
