What is the Behavior of Hyenas?
Hyenas commonly form associations with their relatives, as indicated by research conducted by Holekamp et al. (1997a).
The reason for this strong association lies in the fact that kin is frequently involved in group hunts, the formation of coalitions, and the cooperative defense of carcasses. Due to their involvement in these important social activities, relatives hold a high value as social partners for hyenas.
Hyenas demonstrate a strong cooperative nature towards members of their clan and close relatives. These animals maintain extensive companionship by spending considerable time together engaging in activities such as eating, hunting, and resting. These associations foster enduring relationships characterized by long-term proximity and a high degree of interdependence.
Interesting Facts About Hyenas
Despite the physical resemblance to dogs, hyenas lack any direct evolutionary connection to the dog species.
Instead, they share a closer genetic relationship with meerkats and mongooses. Hyenas possess distinctive characteristics that set them apart, to the extent that they belong to a distinct biological family known as Hyaenidae.
What is the Lifespan of a Hyena?
In the wild, hyenas typically have an average lifespan ranging from ten to twelve years. However, when kept in captivity, they can live up to approximately twenty years, although it is common for them to have shorter lifespans. The maximum age a hyena can reach is influenced by various factors such as social hierarchy, injuries, diseases, availability of food, and genetic predisposition.
While a lifespan of around 12 years may appear short compared to other long-lived species, it is relatively advanced within the context of hyenas and animals with similar lifestyles. Male lions typically live for about 8 to 10 years, while females can reach up to 16 years.
Wild dogs generally have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years, but some may live up to 12 years. According to the Guinness World Records, the oldest known hyena named Mars lived an impressive 28 years and 166 days. Mars, a spotted hyena, resided in the Honolulu Zoo in the US alongside his brother Whoops from 1992 until his passing in 2017.
