Eight Interesting Facts About Grizzly Bears
Here are eight interesting facts about grizzly bears:
Do Grizzly Bears Hibernate?
Grizzly bears undergo three distinct stages throughout the year, beginning with a period of normal activity during the spring and summer months.
As autumn arrives, they enter into a phase of hyperphagia, where they consume large quantities of food in order to gain weight for the impending winter.
Hibernation is the third stage, which can last between 4-7 months and is triggered by a combination of factors including a shortage of food due to seasonal changes, dropping temperatures, and snow coverage.
Where Do Grizzly Bears Live?
Grizzly bears can still be found in western Canada, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and even southern Colorado. Traditionally, they were found from Alaska to Mexico and from the Pacific to the Mississippi, but the western expansion drastically cut down on their population.
In the northern Rocky Mountains, encompassing the Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, as well as in western Montana and far northern Idaho adjacent to Canada, populations have persisted. In Alaska and northern Canada, grizzly bears can be found in huge numbers living inland.
The remaining 26,000 grizzlies in Canada are spread across Alberta, the three territories, and British Columbia, where more than half of them are found. From low-lying coastal areas to high-elevation alpine regions, grizzly bears can be found.
