Evolution and Origins of Mice
While there has been an ongoing discussion about the precise relationship between mice and humans, it is believed that approximately 75 million years ago, the mouse lineage diverged from that of humans. The mouse has held a significant role as the primary model system for biomedical research since the early days of human civilization.
Rather than being directly derived from a single house mouse group, it is believed that the mice in question have originated through the hybridization of two distinct house mouse groups in close proximity on the mainland.
Specifically, the musculus group in China and the castaneus group in Southeast Asia played a role in the hybridization process (Yonekawa et al., 1988, Figure 2.3). Interestingly, this hybrid nature of the mice parallels the hybrid origin of the Japanese people themselves.
