RIP Baby Roxie

Red panda walking on the tree

Animal rights activists are calling for a ban on fireworks after a baby red panda died at Edinburgh Zoo on November 5. Citizens set off fireworks across the UK to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night, a longstanding holiday and tradition centered on fire, explosives, and national history. The holiday celebrates a foiled plot by a group of nonconformist Catholics in 1605 to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Unfortunately, festivities this year halted after the death of Roxie, a 3-month-old red panda at Edinburgh Zoo. Roxie had recently lost her mother and was under extreme duress. Experts believe the fireworks set off during the Guy Fawkes Night festivities caused Roxie to experience severe noise stress, causing her to vomit and asphyxiate on the vomit.

As a result, conservationists and animal rights activists are calling for a complete ban on fireworks in the UK. Zookeepers and pet owners have already complained about noise stress afflicting other animals throughout the region. One solution to the issue includes a complete ban on the sale of fireworks to the public, but it allows light displays and fireworks at official, controlled celebrations.

Internet Star Moo Deng Gets Her Own Song

A baby pygmy hippo has taken the internet by storm over the last few months. Moo Deng, which means “bouncy pork” in Thai, gained fame for her feisty personality and ritual bouncing caught on tape by zookeepers and onlookers. As an internet phenomenon, Moo Deng even has her own merchandise and has made an appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Additionally, she draws thousands of extra visitors daily to her home in Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

Now, Moo Deng has her own official song. Written and produced by Mueanphet Ammara, the song is catchy and upbeat and only around 50 seconds long. The song has also been translated into four different languages — Thai, Chinese, English, and Japanese — making it accessible to fans across the globe. Give it a listen in the YouTube link above.
