Sallie Ann Jarrett
In the spring of 1861, a pup was presented to Captain William R. Terry of Company I from a local of West Chester, Pennsylvania, where the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment was undergoing training. The pup, described as a "brindle, bull-terrier, of a fine breed," was named Sallie Ann Jarrett in honor of a young lady the men admired and their original commanding officer, Colonel Phaon Jarrett. Sallie would accompany the soldiers throughout the American Civil War until she was killed in action in February 1865.
Sallie adapted rapidly to the lifestyle of a soldier and was seen participating in drills with the army and standing with the Color Guard during dress parades. She always took a spot at the front of the line when the regiment left camp, next to Colonel Coulter, who sat atop his horse. This earned her the title of "Dick Coulter's Dog" among the other regiments associated with the 11th Pennsylvania. On two separate occasions, she even marched in a review before President Abraham Lincoln.
Sergeant Stubby (1916 – March 16, 1926) was a pit bull terrier and the unofficial symbol of the 102nd Infantry Regiment (United States) and was connected to the 26th (Yankee) Division during World War I. He worked for a year and a half and took part in 17 battles on the Western Front. His deeds were widely reported in American newspapers of the time.
During his first year of combat, Stubby was hurt by mustard gas. After he healed, he came back armed with a special gas mask to protect himself. This allowed him to alert his unit of mustard gas attacks, find injured soldiers in the war zone, and quickly recognize when incoming artillery shells were coming so that his unit could take cover.
Robert Conroy and the pit bull Sergeant Stubby accomplished a notable feat by identifying and apprehending a German spy. Consequently, their unit's commander gave Stubby the rank of sergeant. Following the Americans' successful retaking of Château-Thierry, the townswomen showed their appreciation by making Stubby a beautiful coat that held his many medals. Unfortunately, he was once again hurt during the war, this time by a grenade, giving him two wound stripes. In the end, Robert and Stubby were able to return home after the war had ended.
What is a Pit Bull?
Answering the question of what is a pit bull can be a difficult task due to the fact that these animals are often wrongly identified, and there is not an agreed-upon definition of which breeds belong in this category and which do not.
The phrase "pit bull" encompasses a wide range of dog types, but not one single breed is agreed upon. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize "pit bulls" as a specific type of dog. However, some AKC-recognized breeds, such as the American Staffordshire terrier, are commonly referred to as pit bulls by the general public. On the other hand, the United Kennel Club (UKC) acknowledges the American pit bull terrier as a breed. The term has been broadly used to describe a variety of breeds or even mixed-breed canines with unknown parentage.
People have varying views on what a pit bull is and isn't. When people refer to them, it could refer to any one of the following breeds or a combination of them: American bulldog, American Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, or English bull terrier.
Dog breeders and others who are passionate about the subject may have long debates about the pitbull label, but it is something that the public pays attention to when laws, military housing, insurance policies, and rental agreements ban "pit bulls."
Are They Dangerous?
It is a common myth that pit bulls are more hostile than other breeds of canines. But the facts don't back that up. According to the American Temperament Test Society, which evaluates dogs' behavior in a consistent and standardized way, these dogs scored better on the exam than golden retrievers and border collies. Although some people assume that pit bulls possess a unique biological composition, they are not fundamentally different from any other type of dog.
In conclusion, it is clear that pit bulls are often misunderstood and unfairly judged. While they can be strong and intimidating dogs, they are also incredibly loyal, loving animals who respond well to positive reinforcement. With the right training and socialization, a pit bull can make an excellent family pet. It is important to remember that any dog has the potential to act aggressively depending on their environment or upbringing — not just pit bulls — so all owners should take responsibility for properly caring for their pets in order to ensure everyone’s safety.
