What is the Lifespan of an American Staffordshire Terrier?
American Staffordshire Terriers or "AmStaffs" are super adorable, smart, and highly protective of their families. They are a fairly healthy breed of dog with a general lifespan of about 12 years old. AmStaffs can suffer from a few different conditions such as knee ligament tears and hypothyroidism. However, as with all dog breeds, regular vet checks are necessary for a long and happy life!
American Staffordshire Terrier Origins
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a medium-framed dog breed with short fur. They are also recognized by the American Kennel Club however they are not recognized by the United Kennel Club, which instead allows AmStaffs to be registered under the American Pit Bull Terrier Breed.
Determining the difference between Amstaffs and Pit Bulls is straightforward since Amstaffs are, in fact, Pit Bulls. However, the American Pit Bull Terrier is often regarded as the "original" Pit Bull and initially shares a striking resemblance with the Amstaff. According to the AKC, the primary distinction between the two breeds lies in their size standards.
Although every American Staffordshire Terrier can be referred to as an American Pit Bull Terrier, it is important to note that not every American Pit Bull Terrier is an American Staffordshire Terrier.
Similar to other bully breeds, both these breeds have their origins in the cruel and barbaric blood sports of the past, such as bull baiting, bear baiting, and dog fighting. These activities involved placing the two animals in a pit to fight each other while their owners placed bets on the outcome.
Are American Staffordshire Terriers Easy to Train?
Regardless of their sad reputations as aggressive dogs that were unfortunately developed during the early origins of this dog breed, the AmStaff are gentle, loving dogs that are easily trained. These amazing dogs also make great protectors for farms and families. While AmStaffs are known to be a bit stubborn stern, yet kind training is usually the best approach. While these dogs are friendly, they can be difficult to train for those new to dog training.
