Breaking news: A fisherman in Homer, Alaska, catches a fish that is bright blue inside late last month!
As a fisherman, being able to catch unique or big fish is what it’s all about! After all, you never know exactly what you might catch. That’s what gives the thrill of it all. Well, for one lucky fisherman on Monday, August 28, 2023, he caught something so unique that it took to the internet and went viral!
Rock Greenling Fish Sighting in Alaska
This next news sighting takes us to the great state of Alaska, in a small city called Homer. This city is approximately 25.25 miles² (66 kilometers²). Homer is near Kachemak Bay, which is approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers).
Fisherman Joe Chmeleck went out fishing late last month and reeled in a rock greenling. What is unique is that this fish has bright blue skin! He immediately shared it on his Facebook and Instagram accounts. Joe is the owner of The Lodge at Otter Cove. Check out his posting of his catch below on his business Facebook page! Rock Greenling (Hexagrammos lagocephalus) Facts
The rock greenling (Hexagrammos lagocephalus) fish can be found on the Pacific Coast and the Bering Sea. This fish is maroon colored, with blue and red spots. As we can see, it is a very colorful fish. It is said that it blends well with its environment.
A regular sighting in California, we see from the Pier Fishing in California organization that the rock greenling has a blue interior of its mouth! Another exciting fact about the rock greenling comes from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife department below.
“This beautiful fish rarely grows to be over 2 pounds. The meat in rock greenling is always blue or blue-green, but when cooked the meat will turn white.”

Alaska is home to a variety of fish, such as blackfish, grayling, hagfish, herring, lamprey, mackerel, rockfish, and many more! However, the official state fish of Alaska is the Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says that “Chinook are Alaska’s state fish. Chinook salmon are called “Kings” for their large size. The longest known trip ever taken by a salmon was a Chinook salmon that traveled 3,845 km upstream to spawn.”
