History Of The Bulldog
This dog got its start in England in what was thought to be the 1500s. However, written evidence suggests that they date back even further, to perhaps the early 1200s when bullbaiting first began, which is what this breed was used for and where they reportedly received their name, bulldog. This dog is believed to have come from the same stock that was originally used for bullbaiting.
The 'sport' of bullbaiting was banned in 1835 by English Parliament due to its cruelty and as there was then no purpose for this breed, they almost became extinct. Bulldog breeders worked to remove their viciousness, which was needed when fighting bulls but was no longer necessary and created a dog with a more loving temperament that we see today.
Interesting Facts
When you think of dogs, you usually think of good swimmers. This is not the case with bulldogs. They are known to be awful swimmers and if put in water situations, they could drown. It is always best to have a life jacket on your bulldog pup because their dense head is just too heavy for their small body to support. Read on to find out more interesting facts.
Types Of Bulldogs
This breed continues to be one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Not only is the bulldog the 6th most popular dog, but the French bulldog took the number 1 spot for the first time and you have plenty of different types to choose from.
