This dog is believed to have come from the same stock that was originally used for bullbaiting.
The ‘sport’ of bullbaiting was banned in 1835 by English Parliament due to its cruelty and as there was then no purpose for this breed, they almost became extinct. Bulldog breeders worked to remove their viciousness, which was needed when fighting bulls but was no longer necessary and created a dog with a more loving temperament that we see today.
