The Coton de Tulear, currently considered part of the Bichon family of dogs, comes from the island of Madagascar, dating to the 15th and 16th Centuries. There is a common story of how a shipwreck occurred in the area of Tulear, Madagascar where a group of small white dogs were the only survivors. They then swam across the Malagasy Channel to the island and it is thought that these dogs were the ancestors of the Coton de Tulear, among other breeds.
As Madagascar was a haven for pirates, it is most likely that they brought these little white dogs with them on their ships, which then came to the island with them. They were believed to be Tenerife dogs and most likely mated with local dogs which then created the Coton, which became a favorite of royalty. This breed is the Official Dog of Madagascar and also known as the Royal Dog of Madagascar and has appeared on the country’s postage stamps.
This dog breed lived quietly on the island of Madagascar for years until being “discovered” by a French tourist in the 1960s. After being brought back to mainland Europe in the 1970s, its popularity grew and the breed was made known in the United States by Jay Lewis Russell who started the first breeding program of the dog and founded the Coton de Tulear Club of America.

Melissa Bauernfeind was born in NYC and got her degree in Journalism from Boston University. She lived in San Diego for 10 years and is now back in NYC. She loves adventure and traveling the world with her husband but always misses her favorite little man, "P", half Chihuahua/half Jack Russell, all trouble. She got dive-certified so she could dive with the Great White Sharks someday and is hoping to swim with the Orcas as well.
