History of the Vizsla
The Vizsla is a pointing dog that originated in Hungary almost 1,000 years ago. They most likely evolved from the original hunting dog that the Magyar Warriors, who lived in the Carpathian Basin, had with them. The breed then became companions of the landowning aristocracy who wished to preserve the pure blood of these dogs that were completely golden from nose to tail. They suffered serious declines during the Hungarian Civil War and even further during WWI, WWII and the Russian Occupation where they almost became extinct.
The breed was salvaged with the help of portrait artist Elizabeth Mihalyi, who escaped from Hungary to Austria, taking with her the family Vizsla, Panni XV. It was this dog, who was further bred, that the AKC recognizes as the foundation of the Vizsla stock.
