What is the Lifespan of a Silverback Gorilla?
Gorillas can survive for more than 40 years in their natural habitat. Male gorillas are classified as "blackbacks" between the ages of 8 and 12. When they reach 12 years of age, they begin to develop a patch of silver hair on their back and hips, earning them the name "silverback".
Additionally, gorillas have a lifespan of approximately 35-40 years in their natural habitat, although they can survive for more than 50 years in captivity.
A gorilla named Fatou was the longest-living gorilla ever in captivity. She is believed to have been born in the wild around 1957.
After being taken by a sailor from West Africa to France in 1959, she was eventually obtained by the Berlin Zoo. Her first offspring, Dufte, was born in 1974 and was the first gorilla raised in Berlin. On April 13, 2022, she celebrated her 65th birthday.
