History of the Breed
Pekingese dates back over 2000 years to ancient China where they were considered a sacred dog and only permitted to be kept by royalty. They were originally bred as companions to the royal or imperial Chinese family during the Han dynasty. This dog was, and still is, considered sacred or lucky in China.
It is said that the breed's development corresponds with the arrival of Buddhism in China. As lions place a central role in the story of the Enlightened One, its devout Buddhist monks developed dog breeds with traits resembling lions. According to legend, this little dog was created by Buddha himself in an attempt to shrink the lion down to a dog size. This is why the breed is also called the lion dog.
Interesting Pekingese Facts
This breed does well in the cold as they were bred to thrive in the cold winters of what was once Peking, now Beijing. They have a super-heavy coat to insulate them. However, this year-round coat doesn't do well in the hot summers. They can't regulate their body temperature very well and don't do well in the heat.
