Located in Kenya, the Masai Mara is a massive expanse of savanna wilderness covering approximately 580 square miles. It forms the northernmost section of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, known for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty. And while the area is beautiful, that doesn’t mean the animals – such as zebras – enjoy a stress-free life.

Many large herds of plains zebras call Masai Mara home. Every day, zebras face formidable land predators such as lions, hyenas, and leopards. However, on some occasions, zebras can also find themselves on the other side of a battle with a crocodile. In the below video, you can witness the tragic (but natural) event that one unlucky zebra faces while crossing a river.

The footage begins with a lone zebra, its black and white stripes standing out against the backdrop of the water. The tension is palpable; the river not only represents a physical barrier but a gauntlet teeming with at least three crocodiles that are immediately visible.

From beneath the surface, the crocodiles emerge with startling speed, zeroing in on their prey with terrifying precision. What follows is a heart-wrenching struggle for survival. The zebra valiantly attempts to fend off its attackers, kicking and thrashing in the water. But the crocodiles, masters of their aquatic domain, quickly assert their dominance.

After a brief, intense fight, the inevitable unfolds—the zebra is subdued and dragged beneath the water. This raw and gripping video captures the brutal reality of life in the wild, where every crossing is a gamble against nature’s unforgiving elements.

What Else Do Crocodiles Eat?

Crocodiles are opportunistic carnivores eating a diverse diet depending on their environment and size. Their diet includes small mammals, birds, fish, bugs, frogs, reptiles, and crustaceans. Crocs are also adaptable hunters capable of consuming other larger prey like wildebeest. In captivity, their diet shifts to include mice, rats, raw chicken, beef, and fish.

A crocodile’s consumption ranges from 2-5 pounds of meat daily, about 5% of its body weight weekly, varying with availability and environmental factors. For more detailed information, be sure to check out A-Z Animal’s article on everything you need to know about crocodiles’ diets.
