Maryland is a beautiful state to visit for many reasons. One of those reasons is hunting! For such a small state, it has so much to offer. After taking my word for it, check out the DNR app for tips, tricks, and rules before packing your hunting gear. This article lists the best reasons Maryland is good for hunting and is underrated! I don’t want to speak for all hunters out there, but each individual has a preference on what to pursue when out in the woods. Maryland is the perfect spot for deer lovers!
1. Acres of Hunting Grounds
Although Maryland is small, there are 4,000 acres worth of huntable land. Maryland also has the largest harvested buck on record on the East Coast. Hunting in wildlands is also allowed. The state owns Wildlands and has the characteristics of the wilderness because of its rare species.
2. Deer Population
If you love to hunt for deer specifically, you will undoubtedly leave home with a prize. Maryland is home to the Sika deer, a unique deer only found in Maryland and Eastern Asia. The Sika deer origin is from an island in southern Japan. You may find this unique specimen in quiet marshes and forested wetlands on the lower shore of Maryland. The second type of deer in Maryland is the White-tailed deer. Currently, the deer herd of the white-tailed is estimated to be over 200,000! Male White-tailed weighs just over 100 lbs, whereas females weigh 90 lbs.

3. Easy Licensing
A license or permit may be needed when hunting in a different state. Maryland has a DNR app that you can download on your phone or online. Residents and non-residents can utilize the app. The process is quick and easy, so you can get out there to find your prize! Different types of licenses can be purchased, such as regular, junior, senior, and non-resident.
4. Bag Limit
The bag limit in Maryland is more lenient compared to other states. A two-buck or antlered deer bag limit is in place for the hunting season combined. One deer per weapon season is allowed; the bag limit is unlimited for antlerless deer!
5. Hunting Perks
During Primitive deer hunt days, hunters can use longbows, recurve bows, flintlock, or sidelock percussion muzzleloaders. The season for deer hunting usually occurs between September and February. During these times, a third antlerless deer can be pursued. Allowing hunters to utilize different weaponry opens up more opportunities for a better catch. I have researched other states for comparison, and Maryland will enable hunters more options for pursuing their perfect catch.

6. Weaponry
In addition to perks, as mentioned above, there are additional weapons that hunters can use, such as muzzleloading rifles, shotguns, and handguns. Hunters can also use a single shot or revolver in all hunting countries.

In conclusion, before obtaining a Maryland license, check out their website for all rules and regulations. The Mayland website for hunting also includes tips and tricks on where to find your prize. The website or app will also keep you updated on perks you can take advantage of!
