Black and white cats are quite beloved by feline fanatics for a few reasons. Their coloring is unique and every cat has different patterns on their fur. Some even have heart-shaped patches that look like little fur tattoos! If you just adopted a black and white cat, check out our list of amazing names for your furry friend!

How Do They Get Their Markings?

Bicolor cats or tuxedo cats, as they’re often called, get their coloring from their faulty genes. In a study on mice published in 2016, scientists discovered that a gene called KIT was responsible for creating the white patches in cats’ fur. Black and white cats are actually just black cats with faulty KIT genes.

The faulty KIT genes reduce the speed at which the cats’ pigment cells can multiply. That’s why they get their coloring in patches. The patches are random, so nearly every cat has a different color pattern.

What Kinds of Markings Can Black and White Cats Have?

Some black and white cats are called tuxedo cats because they’re mainly black with white chests and paws, resembling a suit! Another common marking for black and white cats is cap and saddle markings — fully white with black on its back and head. Cow-colored cats are just like they sound, mainly white with large black patches. Since these cats are so unique, their markings can manifest in nearly any pattern — black cats with white toes, white cats with black tails and ears, and many more!

These special cats can be found in any breed, but they are most often tabbies. They can be long or short-haired or anywhere in between!
