The chow chow is notorious for its lion-like appearance and purple or blue/black tongue. It is an ancient breed that originated in China, with a rich history dating back thousands of years. They are medium to large-sized dogs that originally served several purposes, like guarding, hunting, and pulling carts. However, today, they are mostly beloved, loyal companions. So, if you want one of these furry canines, find out about chow chow prices, including purchase prices, vet bills, grooming, and more.

How Much Does a Chow Chow Puppy Cost?

The cost of a chow chow varies based on purchasing it from a reputable breeder vs a puppy mill or backyard breeder vs a shelter.

The price of a chow chow depends on where you buy it from. For example, breeders will be more expensive than puppy mills, pet stores, and shelters. Explore the table below for estimated prices.

Location of PurchaseEstimated Cost
Reputable Breeder$1000 to $4000
Backyard BreederAnywhere from $500

Chow chow prices from a reputable breeder can cost between $1000 to $4000. While this might seem expensive, you pay for the breeder’s in-depth knowledge, bloodlines, good health, and genetics. Reputable breeders are committed to upholding the breed standards and providing active, healthy dogs. They will ensure their breeding pairs are in good health without any genetic conditions they can pass onto their pups. However, you can also buy your chow chow from a show breeder specializing in show dogs. But, this will cost much more as they are the offspring of champion dogs.

Depending on their location, a chow chow from a backyard breeder or puppy mill usually costs $500 or more. However, these breeders usually raise their puppies the same way farmers would raise livestock in large numbers and house them in cages. Unfortunately, most of the puppies from these places are dehydrated, malnourished, and housed in small spaces where they are repeatedly bred. As a result, these dogs hardly ever get to run freely or have experiences other dogs enjoy. These are generally the puppies you find in pet stores. Furthermore, puppies from backyard breeders usually have serious health conditions due to the neglect they receive. They often have temperamental or genetic problems, poor socialization, and even mental health issues.

Shelter or Rescue

You could find a chow chow at a shelter or rescue if you are lucky. Depending on where you live, shelters and rescues charge an adoption fee between $50 to $500. If you visit one of these adoption centers, and there are no chow chows available, you can ask them to keep your details or fill in an application form to be informed if one arrives.

Other Factors That Influence the Purchase Price of a Chow Chow

Several factors go into determining the price of a chow chow, including:

Breedy Type

A purebred chow chow will always be more expensive than a mixed breed. Since they are one of the most expensive breeds in the world, a hybrid will always be more affordable, usually between $200 to $500.

Location

Chow chow prices will depend on where you buy them. For example, they are cheaper in Asia, where they originate from and are abundant. However, they are more expensive in the USA and certain parts of Europe. But, if you live in an area with many breeders, the competition may make them more affordable.

Bloodline

A chow chow’s bloodline is very important when considering the price. For example, purebred show-quality dogs from a champion bloodline can cost up to $4000. However, unless you want to enter your pup in competitions, buying a show dog is unnecessary. Instead, opt for a reputable breeder, but ensure you are not falling prey to a scam, as there are many scammers out there.

Age

Generally, older dogs are usually cheaper than puppies. However, since chow chows are so rare, even adults cost a pretty penny. Their price is determined by the fact that they are already trained, vaccinated, and fixed. But puppies are still more expensive since there is a high demand for them, but if you want them trained, it’s going to cost you a lot more.

Training

Unfortunately, training a  chow chow is very challenging since they are extremely stubborn and independent. They may fool you when they are puppies, but as they get older, they develop a mind of their own. As a result, chow chows that come trained already fetch a high price.

Cost of Vaccination and Other Medical Expenses for a Chow Chow

The average cost for a chow chows medical expenses, including vaccinations, can cost up to $600 per year. Furthermore, depending on your location, spaying or neutering can set you back between $50 to $300. After the initial vet visit, when your chow is eight weeks old, you will need to take them back at least three additional times during their first year to ensure they are healthy with no underlying issues. Each visit can cost between $60 to $180. However, you can always take your pup to the ASPCA clinic, which offers discounted prices.

Cost of Food and Supplies for a Chow Chow

The cost of food and supplies will vary depending on what brand you buy. But, it is advisable to select good quality dog food that is low in grains. Furthermore, treats are always a good way to reward good behavior. However, some treats can cause allergies or gastrointestinal issues, so check your dog for any symptoms after feeding a new treat. Because chow chows are larger dogs, they will require more food. For example, puppies can eat around 190 pounds of kibble a year, adding up to $150 to $300, depending on the brand. Adult chows can consume approximately 280 pounds of kibble annually, costing between $140 to $400. As a result, it might be best to buy in bulk, as you usually get a discounted rate.

How Much Does It Cost to Insure a Chow Chow?

The price of insurance for your chow chow depends on the Insurer and plan you select. However, an average price for accident and illness coverage can cost $500 annually, while accident-only plans are more affordable at around $150 per year.

How Much Does It Cost to Train a Chow Chow?

You should start obedience training and socialization as soon as you receive your puppy at eight weeks. Chow chows require a professional trainer as they are very stubborn, independent, and usually resist any type of command. You can find recommendations for good trainers from the American Kennel Club or your local veterinarian. If you opt for private classes, they usually include house etiquette, toilet training, jumping, barking, and positive leadership. It’s also a great opportunity to work through any behavioral issues you may encounter. However, group lessons are great for socialization. Depending on your location, you can expect to pay between $900 to $1200 for up to nine private sessions or around $2000 for five group sessions.
