Over 35,000 cities and towns are recognized by the US Geological Survey. Each name comes from historical references, significant figures, and major events that happened in those locations, but even matching names have different roots. Finding the right name for each place is important, but K is one of the least used letters to start them. While there are over 600 cities that start with the more common M, there are about 200 cities that start with K. Read along to learn about some of these cities that start with K.

When you think “Kansas City,” where are you thinking of? With a population of 509,782 residents, this Missouri city is the largest in both population size and area in the whole state. Kansas City is primarily in Jackson County, founded during the 19th century. As part of Tornado Alley, it sits in the middle of a long stretch of land in the United States, with a heavy risk of natural disasters during certain times of the year. This city primarily has a humid continental climate, though some colder areas of the city fall into a humid subtropical zone. The official nickname of Kansas City – the City of Fountains – comes from the fountains at Kauffman Stadium.

Being the third largest city in Tennessee, Knoxville has a reputation for being safe and welcoming to anyone who wants an outdoor adventure. Aptly named “The Cradle of Country Music,” this city has welcomed some of the biggest names in country music history. It also earned the accolade of being one of the top 25 places to live in 2023, though it was the top place in the state.

Key West is both an island in Florida and a collection of islands named the City of Key West. It is 95 miles from Cuba and has a population of 26,444 people as of the last census. Once the home of Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost, this city has a notable history. It is also one of the few places to see where the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

Even though Keystone Heights is in Florida, it got its name from Pennsylvania’s nickname, the Keystone State. The name came from John J. Lawrence, a property developer who saw the area when he visited Florida in 1920, deciding to build their home there as the first home of the future city. It was incorporated in 1925.

Originally settled in 1756, this town offers many historical sites to visit, like Körner’s Folly and the North Cherry Street Historic District. Incorporated in the 19th century, the first census only recorded 585 residents. Nowadays, it hosts an annual Honeybee Festival every fall.

Kokomo, Indiana

Kokomo’s history primarily started with the railroads, with the installation of the first railroad stop in 1854. As natural gas thrived, it was the center of the Indiana Gas Boom in 1885, leading to the launch of the Diamond Plate Glass Company 2 years later. This stained glass company has remained in business in Kokomo for over 100 years, setting a trend of new invention launches throughout its history, including the first aerial bomb (1918) and the first stainless steel tableware (1912).
