December is the perfect time to get away, especially if you live in a climate that’s typically cold, dark, and dreary this time of year. Florida is a popular destination for the holiday season, with crowds flocking to enjoy the magic of Disney or just bask in the winter sun. But generally, if you’re craving heat, you’re going to want to head to the southern part of the state of Florida. The further south you go, the warmer the temperatures will be, as it’s a tropical climate zone. Here is where to go for the warmest places in Florida in December.

1. Key West

As the southernmost point of Florida, Key West is going to be one of the warmest places in December to visit. The Florida Keys have a tropical-maritime climate, which is why Key West’s winter temperature is rarely more than 15 degrees lower than the summer temperatures. The average daily temperature in December is a balmy 76 degrees, rarely going below 67 degrees. The beautiful beaches and water here are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and boating during the winter months. The area also has an active nightlife scene.

2. Miami

This vibrant city is packed with nightlife, shopping, and beaches that are great for people-watching. Historically, the monthly average high temperature in Miami is 77 degrees. The low is 63 degrees, which is still pretty warm for a winter month. Miami’s coldest month of the year is January when the average temperature is approximately 76 degrees. The hottest month to visit Miami is usually July, when the temperature hovers at a little over 90 degrees, rarely dropping past the mid-70s at night.

3. Naples

This city is located on the Gulf Coast and is one of the warmest areas of Florida in December. The average high temperature in December is around 77 degrees. It’s also one of the months with the lowest amount of precipitation, with under two inches of rain being the norm for that time of year.

Naples has famously beautiful beaches with “white sugar” sand.  It’s also packed with activities. There’s world-class golfing, a large number of restaurants, and even a zoo and a botanical garden.

4. Fort Lauderdale

This Florida city may be famous as a spring break destination for college students, but it’s a perfect place to visit in December as well. It’s one of the warmest places in the state during this month thanks to its location on the state’s southeastern coast. The temperature typically hovers around 76 degrees and is unlikely to go much lower than 67 degrees during the day. Like much of Florida, Fort Lauderdale becomes hot and oppressively humid during the summer, so December is the perfect time to enjoy the beaches there (and it’s less crowded than springtime).

Summary of the Warmest Places in Florida in December:

Key West76 degrees
Fort Lauderdale76 degrees
Naples77 degrees
Miami77 degrees
This is the average high temperature in these southern Florida locations during December. Temperatures typically vary within a few degree range this time of year.
