The giant trevally is the enormous (and quite scary) fish featured in this clip. Here, we see this monster leap out of the water to catch a bird. The poor feathered creature was not even floating on the surface; it was flying in the air. Even though the fish is huge, it can propel itself several feet above the surface and snatch its prey. What an extraordinary sight!

The scientific name for this fish is Caranx ignobilis, found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. This means that they are found in the tropical Indian Ocean and the western and central Pacific Ocean. Some countries with these fish off their shores include Bahrain, Fiji, India, and Tonga. You may also see it referred to as a lowly, barrier trevally, or a giant kingfish.

It is known for being both muscular and aggressive, and anglers consider it a great achievement to catch one! Their flesh can be oily but firm and dense with a mild taste. Larger fish have stronger-tasting flesh. However, some contain toxins, so extreme care is needed if you plan to eat some.

How Does the Giant Trevally Normally Behave?

These fish are often found lurking around coral reefs and tidal flats. However, the more mature fish are located further away from the shore and in deeper waters. Depending on where they live, they live solitary and may be most active during the day or night.

Giant trevally should not be underestimated; they can grow to over 65 inches long and weigh over 170 pounds. Despite their huge size, they are strong enough to propel themselves out of the water – as you see in this clip.

These fish are apex predators in their ecosystems. Few animals can catch and kill them – sharks and humans are their only threats. They are aggressive and have even been seen ramming sharks with their heads. Their top swimming speed is over 37 mph.

What Does the Giant Trevally Normally Eat?

These are carnivorous fish who need to hunt other creatures to stay alive. They prefer to catch whatever is easiest. They eat crustaceans, mollusks, eels, and smaller fish. The larger ones can also hunt tuna and mackerel. As you see here, they also feed on seabirds.
