Five Fun Facts About Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are one of the most unique and fascinating creatures found in the animal kingdom. Their unmistakable appearance, with sharp spines covering their backs, is just one of the many interesting things about these interesting creatures.
With that said, here are five fun facts about hedgehogs:
Hedgehog Behavior as Pets
While pet hedgehogs can be quiet, active, and enjoyable to watch, they demand considerable attention and care. Adequate housing that provides sufficient space and regular cleaning, as well as a well-balanced diet specifically designed for hedgehogs, are essential for their health and well-being.
Additionally, as nocturnal animals, they require evening care and feeding to ensure their needs are met.
Although hedgehogs can be an enjoyable and relatively low-maintenance pets, they do require some specific care. Their sharp quills can make handling a challenge, so it's crucial to provide regular, gentle handling to help them feel at ease and comfortable with you.
Establishing a consistent routine of daily interaction can help your hedgehog to relax and become more accustomed to being handled.
The Lifespan of HedgeHogs
Like most small mammals, hedgehogs do not have very long lifespans. Reaching a young (considerably to humans) of 2 to 5 years is the average lifespan for hedgehogs in the wild. In captivity and under the best environmental conditions, hedgehogs can live a little longer to eight years.
While 10 years old is the maximum lifespan for hedgehogs, these 10-year-olds are very far and few in between. For example, a 10-year-old hedgehog would be a 104-year-old in human years. That's how rare a decade-old hedgehog is.
While in captivity hedgehogs can live for a decent amount of time. In the wild, these prickly creatures are prey animals and are victims to harsh elements and no one to take care of them or offer vet care.
