This breed is believed to have begun around 400 BCE in the region of Northeastern Europe that was Pomerania, which is where their name came from. This region is now part of Poland and Germany. They were bred down from their ancestors, which were powerful sled-type dogs, and even as late as the late 1700s were as large as 30 pounds. They didn’t become the tiny dogs of today until the 1800s when England’s Queen Victoria fell in love with them and began breeding them into the smaller version of the lapdog. Today, although there are three types of Pomeranians – miniature, standard, and throwback – the only recognized size is the standard, which is between 7 to 12 inches tall.
While it may not seem like it, Pomeranians were originally bred to be used for hard labor, like herding livestock and pulling sleds. Since they used to be much larger 30 pounds, this seems more likely than the tiny 10-pound lapdogs of more recent times. Their other intended use as a guard dog may still ring true as any dog bark may be a deterrent. Here are more interesting facts about this little ball of fluff:
They are known for their yappy barks.
Famous owners include Michelangelo, Teddy Roosevelt and Martin Luther.

Most puppies of the breed change colors as they get older.
They are part of the spitz-type dog breed.
