History Of The Somali
This breed is said to be the long-haired version of the Abyssinian cat, a cat that is hailed as one of the oldest breeds, dating back almost 4,000 years ago. The Somali breed is said to have originated in the 1940s when Abyssinian kittens were exported to North America, Australia, and New Zealand by the British breeder Janet Robertson. As these kittens were exported to new regions, they began producing litters with long hair which at first were seen as an undesirable variant.
In 1953, the first known long-haired Abyssinian appeared in America bearing the name “Raby Chuffa of Selene.” This male Aby is credited with being the first ancestor of the Somali breed. Many breeders were not fond of this most likely recessive gene passed down through generations and refused to associate them with the Abyssinian. They also did not like them to be called 'long haired Abyssinians". Other breeders, like Evelyn Mague, were fascinated and continued with breeding and it was this breeder who named them Somalis. The breed was established as an individual breed until the 1960s but didn't become recognized until 1991.
