In astrology, there are three modalities, also called modes, that describe the 12 zodiac signs. These modes are cardinal, fixed, and mutable. The qualities of these modes reflect the time of year at which they fall.

  • Cardinal signs come at the beginning of a season and have strong leadership and initiative energy. They represent the creative forces in life.
  • Fixed signs come in the middle of a season and have strong, stable (and sometimes stubborn) energy. Fixed signs represent the conservation of what is already in existence.
  • Mutable signs come when seasons are changing and have qualities of flexibility, adaptability, and compromise. These signs represent transformation and mutation.

People often talk about modalities in terms of Sun signs, but the modes also affect signs of other placements. For example, the mode of your rising sign will affect how other people perceive you. The mode of your Mercury sign affects your communication and intellect.

Another name for the three modes is “quadruplicities” because there are four signs in each mode.

The 12 signs of the zodiac can also be categorized into four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. Another name for the four elements is “triplicities” because there are three signs in each element. Each mode is assigned to one sign of each element.

Signs get their qualities and characteristics from many factors including their mode, element, ruling planet, symbol, mythology, and other components of astrology.

Mutable signs represent change and transformative power. Coming at the end of a season means things are always changing. The leaves are changing color or growing, temperatures are rising or falling, and it’s a generally transitional time. This brings a quality of “go with the flow” to the four signs of this mode.

These are some of the more philosophical signs. People with mutable signs like to know all sides of the story before choosing their position. They generally enjoy learning about a lot of different topics and may learn simply for fun. They will try almost anything once, just for the experience. Like each mode, mutable qualities combine with their assigned element, ruling planet, and other factors resulting in the qualities of each sign.

Mutable signs are often introverted. If they are not, they do need some time to themselves to process their thought and all the new information they have taken in.

A more difficult aspect of mutable signs is that they can seem indecisive. However, it’s not true indecision. It’s just that they don’t want to pick a side or form an opinion without all of the information needed. They may take time, maybe a long time, to mull things over before committing. While some might find it annoying, this is part of the process of transformation: taking things in, processing them, and changing, not immediately, but over time.

Airy Geminis embody mutable energy in their thoughts and actions. They are one of the more obvious mutable signs. They are stereotypically chatty, lifelong learners, and thrive on change and adventure. They can’t be pinned down. Some people think Geminis are duplicitous or two-faced, but that’s not true in most cases. They just genuinely change their mind all the time based on new information. Their minds are working much faster than the average person, so they are able to take in new information, process it, and transform their opinion very quickly. They are also great at creating transformation through spreading information and ideas.

Ruling Planet: Mercury

When people find out that critical, quiet, and organized Virgo is a mutable sign, they may raise a skeptical eyebrow. However, this Earth sign is transformative. They help others to transform through their organizational skills. They are great at detail-oriented work and taking a project from start to finish. Virgos are often drawn towards healing, coaching, or mentoring work and in this way, they help others change. They are also spontaneous within a container of structure. For example, some Virgos are okay with last minute plans, but only with certain “inner circle” friends.

Ruling Planet: Jupiter

Sagittarius is a jovial, abundant, and adventurous sign that quite obviously embodies mutable energy. This is the sign of philosophy and searching for answers to the meaning of life. People with strong Sagittarian placements are often drawn to studying religion and philosophy not from a dogmatic perspective, but simply from a desire to understand the world. They also love travel and can get bored or depressed if there is not enough adventure and change in their life. They also show their mutable energy in their ability to let go of things that are no longer working. They are great at getting things done but in a different way than cardinal signs with more leadership qualities. They simply have a positive and enthusiastic energy that pushes things along.

Watery Pisces is a deep, spiritual, and creative sign. They are very intuitive when it comes to emotions and are drawn to helping people. They can transform the energy of a room with their empathic skills and can change the course of someone’s life by listening and offering sage advice. However, Pisces can struggle with the depth of their feelings and boundaries. They are so adaptable that it’s easy for them to blend their energy with other people. Pisces tend to absorb other peoples’ troubles and can have a hard time figuring out what is their own emotion and what belongs to someone else. They take their friends issues very seriously and will always take the time to properly think things over. For this reason, all mutable signs, but Pisces in particular, need plenty of time to themselves.
